Barbarian Army Configuration

When the map designer specifies the size of the attacking army, Caesar 3 uses different formulas for each type of army to calculate the number of type 2 forces that are used.  For example, if you ask for 20 Carthaginians the player of your game will see 2 elephants and 18 men at arms attack.  This is calculated using a predeternined ration of 10 : 1 for the   Carthaginians.  There are four formulas used to configure Barbarian armies.  Each of these formula use the ratio of the number of Men at Arms (type 1 units) verses the Auxiliaries (type 2 units) to build armies of different looks and capabilities.  Each barbarian army uses the same formula all the time, and every army will use one of these four types:

1:1 – Ratio of type 1 troops to type 2

Applies to: Etruscans, Samnites, Seleucids, Pergamum, Iberians, Nubians, Judeans, Gauls, Helvetii, Goths, Visigoths and Huns

These armies all have an even division between Men at Arms and Auxiliary. They start maximum packing at 96+ soldiers and have a maximum of 4 extra soldiers in all 6 armies with a 120 maximum attack.

Attack of 120 Etruscans to the lower right. 3 armies using 2×8 formations of spear followed by 3 armies of Men at Arms. Max. Pack forces marked.

4: 1 – Ratio of type 1 troops to type 2

Applies to: Macedonians, Graeci and Egyptians

These armies have a ratio of 4 Men at Arms to every 1 Auxiliary.  They start maximum packing the M-at-A at 64+ solders and have a maximum of 16 extra solders in all 3 armies and 24 Auxiliaries with a 120 maximum attack.

Attack of 120 Egyptians to the lower right.  3 armies of M-at-A using 4 x 4 open formations with 16 Max. Pack forces inside.  Two armies of 12 Camels flank.

5:1 – Ratio of type 1 troops to type 2

Applies to: Picts, Celts and Britons

These armies have a ratio of 5 Men at Arms for every 1 auxilary troop.  They start Max Packing the Men at Arms at 60+ specified army size.  At 120, maximum size, there will be 16 extra solders in all 3 armies and 24 Auxiliaries.

Attack of 120 Picts to the lower right.  3 armies of M-at-A in MOB  formations with 16 Max. Pack forces inside.  Two armies of 12 horse carts lead the way.

10:1 – Ratio of type 1 troops to type 2

Applies to: Cathaginians

This army has a ratio of 10 Men at Arms to every 1 Auxiliary.  They start maximum packing the M-at-A at 53+ solders and have a maximum of 20 extra M-at-A solders in all 3 armies and 12 auxiliary Elephants with a 120 maximum attack.

Attack of 120 Carthaginians to the lower right.  3 armies of M-at-A with 20 Max. Pack forces inside.  An army of 12 Elephants flank.
