Praetor,
My name is Marcus Claudius Marcellus, consul of the roman republic!
Gnaeus Cornelius Scipio Calvus, my co-consul, recently provided us with a strategic advantage. His successful campaign in Insubria gave us the opportunity to establish a military outpost there, thus securing our northern border. Since the signing ot the Treaty of Lutatius, Sicily has been an ally, but political relations with Carthage are tensing nowadays. We have to prepare for an open confrontation.
Your task may sound simple, but do not get your hopes up. You are to establish medium-sized city - about six thousand people, a little more in fact. The senate has great expectations about the region, so in order to reach the anticipated prosperity, you will have to maintain at least several villas. Furthermore this city is to be a cultural center for Italy, second only to Rome itself.
Because of the hilly terain you will be forced to plan carefully your water supply, since the nearest lake is controlled by the gauls. I am convinced these savages will bother you frequently hoping to raid your food stocks, or pillage your farms. In order to defend the city, you are allowed to rise six preatorian cohorts.
There is no iron here, but Capua will provide you with the precious resource. |

I'll made few comments about the map, since I forgot to include them in the original post.
-- Warning: May contain spoilers ---
I'm quite sure it is possible to fit 8000 or more people on this map, but I find it quite tedious to fulfill high population criteria. Also the prosperity is reachable, but not with high level housing. Maximum level is medium villa (if I'm not mistaken), since the player is forbidden to build academies. There are few price changes that I think add a little challenge. It may be possible to live only on taxes but I wasn't able to, when I tested the thing. I finished with 82 culture 95 prosperity almost 100 the other two, ~7k population and 25k funds, in around 25 years or so. Anyway, enjoy![Edited on 02/18/10 @ 07:22 PM]

A good scenario for my taste , enough challenges but can be win by an ( a little over... ) average player .
( A knowledge of the prosperity and culture computing is needed , available on forums ...)
Fullfited in Sept 207 , reached by increasing pop' , so 6200 guys , 90 culture , 96 prosperity ,64 peace ( 14 years ,2+2+12x5 ) and 100 for favor , 30k$ ...
A 8k population can be reached , but I think that in this case other criteria will be VERY difficult to reach , by want of space ...
A nice map , with some little problems to solve for setting properly the differents compounds .
( In fact I used a mixed compound for permanents villas and great insulae , with a loop of amphitheater only for villas ...)
The military part is , as usual , anecdotic , 6 javelins + towers , no problem ...

Senseisan, I'm glad you liked it. The main idea behind it was to provide the player with a spot for reservoir and clay production, but that spot to be under attack (as indicated in the story).
"A knowledge of the prosperity and culture computing is needed , available on forums ..."
Well you don't need those, I only calculated the population and extended with villas as needed. Still, I guess it can be easier if it's done with prosperity calculation.
"In fact I used a mixed compound for permanents villas and great insulae , with a loop of amphitheater only for villas ..."
In my test I used large insulae and villa blocks separately.
"The military part is , as usual , anecdotic , 6 javelins + towers , no problem ..."
I don't really know how you do that, but it is playable with iron import (the excess weapons can be sold for money. I used 4 legionaries cohorts and 2 javelin. |

I don't use no more legionaries , too slow and too high cost ( the cost of a legionaries fort is 3x a fort of javelins , sell the weapons ...).
If invaders are very strong , they break the towers wall , and gather on the spot of the broken tower , under fire of 6 javelins and remaining towers .
Just stockpiling bones ...
The most usefull knowledge on prosperity is that it is computed only at the very end of year , setting enough amphiteaters in December leads to a perfect coverage , reaching the entertainment level needed to my insulae to evolve in villas and boosting prosperity .
By deleting this amphiteaters as soon as possible in January , you recover your workers for the 11 following monthes ...^^
That is why I speak of " permanent villas " , these are only " happy tax payers " .

I wouldn't use that (again by choice), in my eyes it's cheating (not judging here, so don't take offence), everyone is free to play as he/she sees fit.
Anyway, I'd really appreciate it, if you write a review of the map, if willing and have the time of course.
Best regards.[Edited on 02/21/10 @ 10:15 AM]

In fact my setting can reach 90 prosperity without this tip *, it is only 6 or 8 years more long ... As life is short ...^^
* needs only deleting in December non-merged little tents providing labor access to some farms .

The file´s name is Mediolanum. The same name is used for original CCK Mediolanum. And it was qite challenge, as high prosperity must be achieved without higher level housing, thus trying to evolve all housing to GI. That was complicated, because farmland is on plateaus, so providing labour was problem without tents or shacks. The military side was way too easy, as the first invasion came after 6 years or so, and it was quite small. Then I could afford walls and towers, backed up by 3 legionaires and 3 javelins- more than enough. |

"The same name is used for original CCK Mediolanum"
Well I wondered how to remove that problem, but never came up with a descent answer. I could have added a prefix or suffix to the name, I guess, but I don't know why I didn't.
"And it was qite challenge, as high prosperity must be achieved without higher level housing, thus trying to evolve all housing to GI"
Well I'd advise to use large insulae only, since they require only one food type, and in central provinces wheat is more efficient to grow. That would make the player's life easier.
"That was complicated, because farmland is on plateaus, so providing labour was problem without tents or shacks."
I am happy to have succeeded in that - it was one of the minor goals I've set for me, while designing the map.
"The military side was way too easy, as the first invasion came after 6 years or so, and it was quite small. Then I could afford walls and towers, backed up by 3 legionaires and 3 javelins- more than enough."
Well the military part is just complementary, there is one big invasion (you may not have experienced that if you finished too early).
I don't really think that the main goal for a map should be battles, Caesar is more of an economic simulation ... although successful maps, with lots of battles had been created.
Regards.[Edited on 03/03/10 @ 05:43 PM]

Playability 2
The only way I could see myself replaying this map would be to clean up and make some adjustments to my original city design. There are too many attacks that are just a nuisance that deter me somewhat from wanting to revisit this scenario.
Balance 4
It is rated as hard and I will give it that. Building space is a bit crowded in some spots and food delivery can be challenging. Limiting the maximum housing level to large villa was the fun and challenging part of this map.
Creativity 3
Limiting the water source to the north while leaving the building space to the south was somewhat creative. Beyond that there isn’t much new here.
Map Design 2
I usually don’t like putting farmland right next to the edge of a map where there could be a potential invasion point. There could certainly be exceptions, but in this case it looks like the designer wanted the player to have the option of utilizing farmland near or right on the edge of the map. Lining the edge of the map with elevation or rocks or trees can show a player that no attacks are coming from that direction. The designer could have also said in the instructions that the only attacks would be coming from the north.
Story/Instructions 4
The instructions flow nicely. I can tell a lot of work went into the instructions. A nice little setup and then a succinct preview of what is to come.

Darkgreen, your feedback is, as always, appreciated. I hope you don't give up on me just yet, since you haven't enjoyed playing the map. |
