Nearing retirement, your seniority (in age and rank) has afforded you your pick of assignments. Fittingly, you've chosen to build your next settlement in Milagro. The island has been known to you for quite some time now. You've heard of its calming waters, but it's the abundance of natural springs there which has piqued your interest. These hot springs are known to have rejuvenating qualities, and since getting on in years, you've been wanting for ways to soothe your tired and weary muscles.
Currently, there are two factions claiming rights to the island. A small native clan, who consider the lands ancestral, has been clashing with a barbarian tribe trying to stake out a territorial claim there. Seeing a third party get involved will certainly rile them up; but as their numbers are now reduced, so will be their level of threat.
Just keep fending off their persistent attacks and an opportune time will come for you to bring home a triumphal arch. Its presence should be enough to further weaken their resolve and cease their incursions into the island once and for all.
An addendum to your mission:
Events happening offshore may have some ripple effects on your city; namely a sudden drought which has affected food production in a few provinces, and a recent upsurge in construction which has had everybody scrambling to acquire marble from all available sources. |

Playability:4
As suggested by the instructions, the attacks are frequent and dense at the beginning of the map. The only reason I give it a 4 is the density of the invasions (there were a few triple invasion events) mean they were over relatively quickly, which left quite a long time with peaceful building. Which is fine, but perhaps the some of the invasion events could have been consolidated and made slightly larger to ensure events continued a bit longer into the map.
Balance: 3
The tight terrain in this map provides the biggest challenge, though it can also trivialize the attacks through choke points. Multiple and easily accessible native trading huts mean your budget is fairly trivial to balance. I initially didn't realize there were two trading huts, and had to work much harder on my budget, as soon as I realized there was a second trading hut the economy became very easy.
Creativity: 5
I liked the idea of the two waring groups becoming upset at the romans moving in on their turf and making common purpose against you. Having Visigoths and natives attacking at the same time caught me unprepared in my first attempt.
Map Design: 5
The map is gorgeous and gives the player a number of options for building their city, while still challenging with tight and rugged islands. I like the inclusion of the "hidden" valley on the right which was covered in trees.
Story/Instructions: 5
Instructions gave us an idea of what to expect.
Additional Comments:
I played through the map on Augustus, very hard with global labour turned off. A fun map with some tight areas to work around, though maybe a bit too easy on the economy. Restricting native trading huts to a single one which is awkward to access would have upped the challenge. All in all a very enjoyable map which is a joy to look at. |

Thanks Baron, for the comprehensive review. Glad you had fun playing it.
I initially started here with just the 2 trading huts on the NE tip of the map. Only 1 was open for trade, activated by pacifying the sealed off trading hut. During the early playtests, I found myself always starting on the mainland, so I figured one way to entice players to start building on the island itself is to place trading huts there as well.
Looking at it now, I realize the addition of 2 more huts does make the economy much easier to manage. Choosing not to trade with the natives can be an option though, for those wanting an additional challenge. Or maybe building the city without any taxation. |

A very nice map with many options :)
You can use the fertile land and space near invasion points or squeeze the population onto the islands or wait until the invasions are over or ...

trolgu hi,
Appreciate the review.
Thanks for playing the map, and twice! I think it highlights the options available in approaching this scenario (notwithstanding the dock placement which seems locked in one obvious spot).
There’s also space to maneuver around a hippodrome in a few locations, if one wants to build a luxury palace.
Side note: I continued my playthrough here with a test run on Augustus, because I wanted to see a lighthouse overlooking the entrance to the city. Verdict: a beautiful design but the 3x3 footprint, to me, looks not quite big enough. An upgrade to a 4x4 size would certainly make it a more imposing structure.
And one more: With the rank and starting date, Milagro was aligned as a follow-up to my previous Sierra Madre.

Loved it:)
Balance: 4
The balance between eco and military is fine. Budget on the easier side because a lot of export available. U can cancel exports pretty early and rely solely on taxes. That was relaxing:)
Creativity: 5
A lot of different approaches possible. I really liked that.
Map Design: 5
Very cool design of the islands and some really cool spots. Amazing!
Story/Instructions: 5
Hot springs from intro well reflected in the map. Really liked those spots.
