Okay, a few RULES for this thread.
This is meant to be a housing block library so...

Please limit your replies to posting your favorite block with a text description. Please don't reply just to say 'nice block' or to ask how the walker will make it all the way around. If there is an obvious error with a block, please e-mail the poster and let them fix it.

It would be nice to have an uncluttered thread of everyone's blocks without a lot of chatter or discussion.

Nuff said. Any format is great, Glyphy or other picture form.

Discussion on this thread has a sister thread called
Discussion Thread for Favourite Housing Blocks

Please use it for questions or comments regarding the blocks you see posted here. Thanks

This is the backbone of most of my cities. I will use this in a grid of avenues or boulevards in my main city. I will also use it in almost every colony I go to.
It holds 2400 people when fully evolved. As Grumpus pointed out, the theatre,etc.. can be dropped to get more housing in.
The corner houses need a perimeter road in order to have road access as they do not get it from the inner ring. This is why I usually use it in a grid. It's very esthetic when used that way. In colonies or in tight locales, I will omit the outer road and put gazebos in the corners.

In early missions or colonies where avenues are not enabled, I use the outer road to give road access for outside houses and replace the avenue tiles with gardens. The outer road gives road access and the vendor's cart still gets within 2 tiles of the house to give it supplies.

A good example of this block in action is my city New Athens which is in the download section.

This is an over-engineered marvel that I don't use very much.
It was a great experiment in how much you could squeeze into a block and control the walkers. It works very well and is posted in the Miscellaneous section of the downloads. (The downloads has a 10x28 mixed block that is too finicky with respect to entertainer walkers and I do not want to post it in this thread.)

I have used it in some cities, I think in my Trojan War adventure and in a version of Thebes that I never finished.

I secretly hate it because I had to use two fountains

I really like this block because of it's simplicity. It is really long, so long in fact that I had to chop 8 houses out of the middle to get it to fit into the forum. Because of that, I rarely get to use it at full length because the maps hardly ever allow it. It does work great in a shortened version. Just leave out houses to get it to fit. I haven't tried getting 18 or 20 houses into it. I don't think the walker distances would allow it to go bigger than 16 so I never tried.

If you stack two together, you can use schools in place of the podium and the theatre in one of the blocks. Two blocks will give you 16 companies, a pretty powerful army in any city's book. It also works with two common agoras if you don't want to double up on horse and armor vendors.

If you want to see it in action, look at my Iolcus in the downloads section.

This is the block I use for colonies which need Hercules, namely the Hercules Labour's missions. The m.o. for the inner ring actually services the schools, Herc's gym, the palace and the stadium. Herc's Hall, pictured as an elite house does not require fire or collapse protection. The culture walkers from the schools and Herc's gym all walk past the Hsll to get to their venues.

The block holds 1680 people if all the houses make it to townhouse. I have shown it without avenues as a lot of the colonies do not have them enabled.

This block is by no means perfect, but it suits my purposes nicely. What I noticed with many concentric blocks were the immense size of them.
This block is somewhat smaller and is really quite adaptable.

In my opinion, this is a great block to start out with in any given scenario.

Fully evolved 1620 people can reside in this block.

I have discovered a truly marvellous signature, which this margin is too narrow to contain.

An Elite Housing Block

If available, I alternate monuments and hedgerows as the high appeal items. The three agoras are usually as follows:

Agora A - Food, Fleece, Arms
Agora B - Arms, Oil, Horse Trainer
Agora C (next to the ranches) - Arms, Horse Trainer, Wine

Because the ranches are an integral part of the block, the horses are snapped up as soon as they are spawned. I usually try to have some armor stockpiled before going into battle. Quite often I am able to replace battle losses before the troops return.

If possible I build two of these blocks side by side. They then share a strip of high appeal items.

Suggestion If you use this puppy, place the ranches first. That way you'll have horses available by the time you need them.

The aesthetic look also is important to me.

The good news is I left room for expansion (houses or services as needed). If I tweak out the nicities and do some shifting, I can add even more houses.

I also "stack" blocks both vertically and horizontally. I position services (warehouses, food storage, etc) between the blocks. The largest town I made so far has been a 3x4 of these blocks.

I put 2 modified-SenetEr 40 house common blocks above, and either 2 more common housing, or a modified-Grumpus 18 elite block to the south. I like to put the horse ranches on either side as shown to the right, but do move them to the other end of the elite block like in the Grumpus above.

The granaries will hold food for 10,000 ppl for one year so i don't need all of them most of othe time. In one city i had to "get" food from another area of the map and the extra granaries really helped.

I know some players like to surround their housing block with columns, this is the one for them(I'll try it myself the other time). Not very economic, but all 37 houses should be able to evolve to townhouses(haven't have every tile calculated):

Note:The two 2x2 gardens on the left are actuallt gazebos. That row of pillars in the middle must be benches(if they are columns or gardens, only 39 points available for the nearby houses). This is also the case for the houses in the middle of top and bottom rows(nead several gardens outside of the columns). If you prefer extreme rigidity, remove the odd house on the bottom right.I suggest leaving it as blank, fill in some cultural buidings before the pan-Hellenic games, that will increase the chance of winning a commemorative.

I've never used the "glyphy" thing, so I won't even try...

The latest housing block (common) that I've worked up is a basic 'U' shape, containing 25 Common houses arranged on both sides of a 'U' shaped Avenue, with the Agora, College, Drama School, Maintenance and Tax at one end of the 'U', all the culturals at the other end end of the 'U'... the Fountain is in the middle (outside) of the 'U', and the whole thing is surrounded by 2-tile-wide Parks, with a 10x2 row of Parks running down the center of the 'U'. I deliberately duplicated a Maintenance Office and Tax Office, so there's one on either end of the 'U', and it was necessary to place a second Infirmary at the other end of the 'U'.

This description probably stinks , so check out the actual screen cap on my Foundry (http://foundry.4mg.com/index.html) site, on the Population page. Fully developed, it holds 1500 people... a nice round number, especially for stuff like "Perseus and Medusa" ep. 6

Occasionally for a smaller block in a narrow area I'll use just a basic straight line... 3 or 4 houses on either side of an Avenue, with all the supply stuff at one end, and all the cultural at the other, the whole shebang surrounded by 2 or 3 tile wide Parks.

Wolfie.

This is another oddity that I don't use much. It is a true concentric in that it has no road access to the inner ring. The 2x2 garden plot (not a flower garden) by the agora allows access to Greece for the inner buildings. The agora works by the 'back door'. The buyers exit out of the rear of the shops and the vendor cart appears out the front into the inner ring.
Because there is no road access out of the block, the schools must be in the block which reduces it's usefulness.

I have included it here for interest sake as it demonstrates an odd feature of the game, namely that agoras have back doors. It also is the only game where a true concentric block can exist.

Another "enclosed" block, this time the inner ring road is 8x20(I stick to the 52 tile length, the maxium "safe" distance for water carriers and healers). It holds 40 houses.

I've been experimenting with desirability without the use of commemorative memorials and came up with this "Free Flowing Block". I'm posting a 3 row & 4 column version but you could start with a 2 row & 2 column version and expand upward in any direction. Things I like about the block:

1) No commemorative memorials required.
2) Expandable into unusual land contours.
3) Boulevard intersections are highlighted with 4 statures (game characteristic).
4) Free and random movement of services and people within the block.

Although this block is heavily intersected, it is extremely stable and will evolve at a rapid rate. I have used this block for many game years and have yet to have a house devolve.

If you wish a copy of a city using this block just send me an e-mail.

Good gaming,
Vriesea

I designed this monstrosity to see how many people I can fit in one block. The answer is 3240 people in 54 Townhouses. All houses should evolve to Townhouse at any difficulty level (I tested at Titan). North must be at the top left of the diagram.

The block takes advantage of the fact that Infirmary and Fountain walkers (who have the shortest range) re-enter their building at a different place from where they exit. In this block they exit on the right of their buildings and walk down the right side of the block. When they reach the end of their random walk, the only way to get to the entrance to the building (on the left in this case) is to continue round the block and take the spur road around the top left corner.

Athletes plus Actors give enough culture points for Townhouses, but if you want Philospher access as well (to help win Pan-Helenic games for instance), you can place a podium instead of the house inside the top of the main loop (the one between the Maintenance office and the Tax Office, right below the roadblock).

This should work mirrored or rotated in any direction as long as the shortest route to the stadium is along the road that exits the block at the top left of this diagram (i.e. diagonally opposite the Theatre). The houses should evolve to estates at any difficulty level (I tested at Titan), although some houses may not have enough appeal until the surrounding houses have evolved to Estate.

Darth, (and all others) you should leave a space between each of the tags or the forum will start putting in spaces of it's own.

Here is a 40 Townhouse block I'm currently using in the

I originally had the podium next to the agora, but had to
shift it next to the Infirmary as the house there wouldn't
evolve all the way to Townhouse. This block evolved from
the following non-bloulevard/avenue block which contains
36 Townhouses opposed to the 40 above:

The second tax office was generally a watchpost. I just
learned recently how useless they are (except for wolf
hunting). The gardens are usually a combination of
gazebos and flower gardens, though I have just inserted
a third fish pond on occasion. Note that I have a
preference for two even edges on my blocks when possible
as there usually stacked next to each other with a row of
appeal structures between them, though I think the first
block above should evolve completely without additional
appeal.

Here's my elite housing block. It consists of two common agoras sandwiched between two wings
of 14 elite houses (each pair below represents 7 pairs) capped by a complex of a tax office,
maintenance office, drama school, gym, and college. It's somewhat slow to rearm, but I often
place an arms dealer in each agora if I don't have access to horses yet.

Legend

If I need access to the end of the wing I uncap the end like so:

Legend

Also, if there is a common housing block past the end of a wing, the drama school and college
can be removed from that end as walkers from the other wing will cross the entire block to get
to the common housing.

Legend

The length of the wings is limited by gymnasium athlete access to 7 houses long, making
the maximum elite housing of 28 houses.

Here's an alternate version of my elite block that I use when I need to get around terrain.
This L-shaped version tends to fit along corners in coast edges. Again, each pair of manors represents 7 pairs.

Finally, with another bend, here's the U-shaped version of my elite housing block. This one
is nice for maps with large open areas. The extra two manors at the corners of the U give
this block a max of 30 houses (both wings extend upward in this version).

I usually lay my blocks down in pairs, with an Agora Neighborhood between them.

Legend

This is my latest creation done with precise calculations and I think it is pretty much the maximum you can get with one set of buildings. (EDIT: Just saw nerowoulds 54 townhouse block. I take my word back. I have yet to learn )
It evolves all the way to townhouses and holds a total 2820 people with only one set of buildings (two infarmaries and fountains though). It is very stable but two things must be noted. The entertainers come from outside (doesn't matter where) and the food and supplies are also outside. That is because I usually put up to four of them around a central area of goods and entertainment. It seems clumsy but it is actually very verstaile and fits easily. Two of them will be enough for almost any city.

Also note that I put two monuments there. If you are short on monuments you can use parks but I don't guarantee it. (actually only two monuments will be enough if you can spare them). And don't forget to put the necessary appeal for the houses on the outside.
Hope it helps somebody. Certainly helped me.
