Topic Subject: How do you format a drive with an OS on it ??
posted 06-25-03 04:18 ET (US)

I thought you booted up from a boot disk ? but I could not for the life of me get it to. Then I thought its just a case of 'format c:' from a command prompt !! ??

OS = Win 2000 pro

It has 2 hours to behave before it goes out a third floor window!!

Hi Rocky.. whats up??

Win2K acting up..reeaaly bad? Formatting is lethal to whatever is on your HD and will be History..especially if you just have a C partition. IF it's necessary then it's backup time in Rockyville.

*edit*Havng a boot disc handy makes the starting anew process much easier. Give us a hint on what you would like to do..?

Hi ET,

Its my father in laws pc & its been corrupted along the way by stacks of internet rubbish, pop up etc etc, everytime he tries to access the web he cant due to various errors and IE runtime errors. basically its beyond the point of repair and the best thing to do would be just to re-install 2000.

I did this with mine a couple of weeks ago (re-installed 2000 over the top) and it worked a treat, this pc will not...on trying to install 2000 it keeps coming up with 'file not found...find/cancel/skip' etc... As there is absolutely nothing on his pc that is of vital importance I thought it best just to do a clean install on a formatted HD.

I created a boot disk which the help suggests you need 4x3 1/2 inch disks ????? I did this but it wouldn't recognize it and no matter what I did in rebooted to windows so therefore I couldn't format..???

Heeelpppp !!!!

Hi Rocky

If the computer can boot on a CD, simply boot on the CD and do a clean installation (not a repair).

You might need to change the boot sequence in the BIOS for booting on a the floppies.

Hi PCD,

Daft question, but what CD is it ?? I assume you 'shutdown / restart' with the CD in and it should boot from that and bypass the OS ?

Is it a 'boot CD' ? or the Win 2000 one ??

The W2000 CD should be a bootable CD, Rocky.
As Dania says you may need to set the BIOS so it will boot from CD before booting from the HD.

Thanks AJ,

You know what my next question is !!

You obviously have to press a function key to get in the bios on start up, (Once i'm in I'll be OK).......I can't remember which one !!

Rocky this is where it gets tricky It can be anything from the delete key through one of the Function keys but not F8 It's called trial and error to find the set-up key to get into bios it should come up on the screen but usually too fast

Mostly it's the Delete key.
And when you get into the BIOS you have to search for which page you can actually set the Boot Sequence...
