I am happy to report that I have started work on yet another new custom campaign. Inspiration for this one came after it occurred to me that many players may have missed some of my more memorable design tricks because I used them only in 'Very Hard' difficulty campaigns. I know playing "very hard" campaigns is not everyone's cup of tea.

My favorite mission of my old "A Xia's Diary II" campaign was mission 7, "The Lost Treasure of Annam". In this mission I used some interesting scripting to simulate the player finding a vast treasure hidden on the map. I am resurrecting this design concept in a new 'normal' difficulty campaign called "The Lost Treasure of Nanyue". This new campaign will have an extended timeline over 3 missions so I will be able to enhance the "treasure hunt" theme, most notably by showing the consequences of finding a treasure (the good and the bad).

To reinforce the "treasure hunt" feel, I am doing something with the map design I have never done before - using trees to cover 99% of the land on the map. I am doing this to simulate dense jungle, which requires the player to use the shovel icon during gameplay to clear away large portions of the map in order to build their city and also "discover" some resources hidden under the trees.

The new map is 'enormous' size and has a humid climate. It represents a jungle valley in southwestern Nanyue (present-day Cambodia). Predators abound, and a player will have to take steps to manage them.

A backdrop to the storyline will be the Han emperor Wu Di's expansion into the Kingdom of Nanyue in the 2nd century BCE. All action in the campaign will occur on the single new map and here are the drafts of the 3 missions:

M1 - Riddle of the Lost Scroll- begins in 137 BCE
M2 - The Lost Treasure of Nanyue - begins in 124 BCE
M3 - The Conquest of Nanyue - begins in 112 BCE

I will upload screenshots of the playtesting for viewing in the Emperor Heaven Gallery soon.

I anticipate this campaign will be done sometime in August 2020.

I completed my first playtest of mission 1. The map seems to play well although the pace is slower, due to the need to clear away so many trees. The pace is even slower if perfect Feng Shui is desired, but it is worth it (my opinion). I do feel like there is a feeling of jungle immersion, especially when you see how the city looks on the minimap.

The predators are a nuisance but are controllable (military towers); I think my placement of their spawn points was good.

Due to the slower pace of this first mission, I decided not to put very much scripting in it. This allows a player to focus on coming to grips with the map challenges without undo distractions.

I have completed the campaign introduction story (told in first-person narrative) and the mission 1 introduction text. Nothing is written beyond that yet, but I have the story written in my mind.

I uploaded 4 new screenshots into the teaser album, viewable in the Emperor Heaven Gallery.

I completed my first play through of the entire campaign. The scripting only required a little bit of tweaking. I think the campaign plays well, but it will be a bit more military-oriented than my last one.

So what is left? The storyline! I still have not written it further than the mission 1 introduction. I need to complete the story and then do one more complete playthrough. After that I will write the Readme file and the project will be done.

It's possible I may get this released by the end of July. Meanwhile, I have added four new screenshots to the teaser album.

Good progress to report.

I completed writing the entire storyline, and also began a replay of the entire campaign. I have finished testing missions 1 and 2 and only a couple of tweaks to scripting was needed.

I still need to playtest the third mission and then begin writing the Readme file.

I uploaded 5 more screenshots of the playtesting into the teaser album, if you care to look.

Everything came together smoothly for me to wrap up this project. I added a few more screenshots showing my solutions to winning the missions, viewable here.
