‘Twas the witching hour…
Posted on October 31st, 1999 by Angel Reckless Rodent
It was the night of 31st October 1998. The wind was howling, the lightning striking the trees on the hills of northern Bristol. The night belonged to ghouls and wraiths, who moved silently through the night, undetectable by humans.
Meanwhile, the night was calm in the Caesar III Heaven General Help, Wishes and Comments forum. Discussion was continuing as it had done for the past 3 weeks. Nobody noticed a figure slip quietly under the front door, nor did they see it scurry across the floor to the registration area. Little did people know that life would never be the same again. Suddenly, a gust of wind rattled the windows. People stopped discussing the virtues of Lugdunum, and looked at the door to the registration room. There was some kind of unearthly bright light behind it. Everybody held their breath, waiting for this new horror to be unleashed.
The door creaked, and then flew off its hinges. The bright light momentarily blinded all present. When they could see again, they looked in terror at the figure sitting in the doorway.
“Squeak” said the small golden hamster. Everybody breathed a sigh of relief, and then went back to what they were doing.
Ok, that was a really silly story, but at least it gets the vague significance of today across. 1 year ago today I registered on the C3H forums. Amazing what can happen in a year ;).
Pharaoh hits the shelves
Posted on October 30th, 1999 by Angel Reckless Rodent
So they did make the October release after all. Pharaoh has hit the shelves of some game stores in the US. Electronics Boutique seems to be the place to be if you want to get your hands on it.
Not sure of what I’m talking about? Then head over to Pharaoh Heaven to join in the party!
Map Editor forum goes into overdrive
Posted on October 29th, 1999 by Angel Reckless Rodent
It’s amazing what a bit of publicity will do. The Scenario / Map Editing forum has come to life since I posted about it earlier this week. Angel ET FLAVIUS want’s to know who’s creating new scenarios right now, and Bob the Lethargic’s top 10 things that make a bad scenario has re-appeared after 5 months off the thread list.
If you’re currently creating a C3 scenario and are wondering how you can get it to other people, just send them over to Angel Monty’s Monkey, who will gladly add it to the downloads section – yours might be the scen that takes us over the 200 mark! Angel Reckless Rodent

Here’s a cry for help from the Game Help forum:
I know how to use the risk overlayers and the water overlay but have no idea how to use the others. The commerce overlay would be a big help in Lugdunum.
If you can help out, do so here.
Posted on October 27th, 1999 by Angel Reckless Rodent
I bet you didn’t think it was possible that there could be an overlooked forum on this site…
However, there is! It’s the Scenario / Map Editing Forum. Not many people post in there, but it really is a must-see for anyone interested in creating maps and scenarios. For example, there’s a discussion going on about what makes a good scenario that I’m sure plenty of you out there would like to participate in. Apart from that, this particular forum is pretty quiet right now. Don’t let that put you off though!
More Tarsus problems
Posted on October 26th, 1999 by Angel Reckless Rodent
Just a quickie tonight.
Following on from yesterday’s Tarsus problems, here’s another one:
I’m new to the site, but not to the game. Have been slowly playing CaesarIII. When I win one level, I’ve been replaying it, trying new approaches, designs, and tactics. Having fun with it. Until Tarsus!!! I try to get small palace blocks (usually 4 palaces), but they don’t stay stable for more than 1 year. The rest of the city usually gets up to large insulae. I’ve moved the palace blocks and the insulae blocks all over the map to kep a steady stream of food and goods moving to the markets. Prosperity gets close to 60, but not quite at or over it. Tend to have relatively high unemployment as well. Any tricks to beating Tarsus that any of you “experienced” players have for someone stuck in the desert? Much appreciated!
Hints and tips would be appreciated here.

Wow, it looks like some people round here had forgotten how to archive the news. Anyway, I’ve put news posted here since September 28th in the news archives, so this page should hopefully load quite a bit faster.
What’s going on at the moment? Quite a lot, considering how long the game’s been out, and that Pharaoh will be hitting the shelves very soon. Just to prove that we aren’t just a community forum, I’ve got a few things here from the Game Help forum (for newcomers, that’s the place to go to get help about the game, as the name probably suggests).
Tarsus seems to be causing problems at the moment. There are a couple of threads in there related to problems encountered in that city. First off, we have some lazy potters who’ve been causing JasonL some headaches, and then we have some fishermen who seem to want to siphon off the local wine supply. Take a look in those and see if you can add to the advice already given.
One more for tonight – seems like Caesar hates one of our forumers. Help is required!
Missing news, missing threads
Posted on October 24th, 1999 by Angel Jayhawk
Yes, I admit it, I didn’t write down any news yesterday. As a matter of fact I hardly saw my PC yesterday. I had friends visiting and spent quite sometime in the kitchen working on a gobhi masala and some tikka masala. Tasted wonderful, but by the time they left I was more than ready for bed.
So what is happening on the Caesar 3 forum?
Well, the most scary thing is that the auto-close a thread at 150 posts feature seems to close the thread permanently. Close them and lock them and hide them. To be on the safe side, until this quirk is addressed, please stop posting at 145 post or so and wait for any of the moderator angels to close the thread. It seems a shame to loose all these wonderful threads this way.
Here’s some good news, a list of book recommendations.
Tomorrow will see you in the capable hands of Angel Reckless Rodent again, as I will be changing the green hills of Rome for the tan ones of Egypt once more.
Will I ever sleep again?
Posted on October 22nd, 1999 by Angel Jayhawk
This is the question Theodoeraus asks us in the Game Help forum. I answered: “No.” Things will be getting worse once Pharaoh hits the shelves, I’m afraid.
People are still playing with HTML in the Test forum.
Most of the action is taking place in the Community forum. So, what else is new…?

And here are the latest download statistics.

Missing file arriving home, while I’m writing this text
Posted on October 20th, 1999 by Angel Jayhawk
Groan, grind, I can hear my mailbox chugging along trying to digest the huge Olympics Pack Fiona found lurking in a dark corner of her hard disk.
I’d like to say:
“Thank you very much”, to Fiona, and
“Please, don’t send it to me anymore” to everybody else.
Anyroad, I’ve got the file and am uploading it as I write. Okay, so I spent the time waiting for it to arrive in my mailbox, by posting on the various forums…
Some time later…
Okay, it should be here. Careful now it’s 6.7Mbytes.
One of our files is missing and some others just arrived
Posted on October 19th, 1999 by Angel Jayhawk
Most of you will remember the Caesar 3 Olympics. Well, on eof our forumers found out the OlympicsPack.zip went missing if there is any of you out there that has the complete pack still somewhere on his or her hard disk, could he or she please drop me a line? Or better mail it to me at Angel Jayhawk.
Angel Monty’s Monkey dropped me a note telling me that he’s uploaded another 10 scenarios, making it a grand total of 199 scenarios. As expected, they can be found in the Download Section
I hope to update the download statistics in tomorrow’s news.
More internal news, Pharaoh Heaven is on the look out for a cherub with graphical skills. If you’re interested read the Pharaoh news carefully and follow Angel Reckless Rodent’s instructions.
Last but not least, I hear that Microsoft is going to put up the Asheron’s Call beta for grabs on their site. Until midnight October 24th you can stroll along the green fields of Dereth and interact with all the other players.
You can find the Asheron’s Call Open Trial here.
Be warned, though, it is not for the faint hearted. The download is 53Mbytes big.
New member admitted to the Millenium Club
Posted on October 18th, 1999 by Angel Jayhawk
It’s true, Proconsul Creaticus Dania is the latest member of the Millenium Club. You can offer him your congratulations here.
As for our sequels we now feature Where in the World 14, Walk Though History 5 and What Word 2.
We actually have more scenarios reviewed, in this case it’s Trevor Hall’s High Desert and Bob the Lethargic’s Numidia – King Massinissa. Bob was also kind enough to provide us with the complete, updated, unadulterated version of the BTL Enterprises Catalog.
Oh, if anybody wants to start working on a new signature, it seems there’s a new class started in the Test forum.
Great things to come
Posted on October 17th by Angel Reckless Rodent
Most of the Pharaoh Heaven Angels have just had a meeting to discuss what’s going to happen over there when the game’s released in a few weeks time. Believe me, it’ll be great when it all comes together. In a similar vein, keep an eye on PH tomorrow if you want to help out over there. I’ll reveal more when I update there tomorrow.
There’s something kinda important over at Tzar Heaven today too. I’d appreciate it if you’d all toddle over there and take a look at what’s going on. Fan power is needed once more!
Grüße aus Deutschland!

Formulare, Formulare, Formulare. So ist das Leben in Deutschland.
Oops, got to get out of German mode. (cue sound of cogs whirring, accompanied by a squealing sound. Click)
Ahh, much better. Now, on to the news thingie that I’m here to do:
We have a new Cherub at HGS! Cherub Gustavia has joined the Pharaoh Heaven team, and I’m sure she’ll prove to be a most valuable addition. Click here to send your congratulations, if you haven’t already done so over at Pharaoh Heaven.
Here’s a mail from Angel Draco that I found nestling in my inbox this morning:
I added three new cities today. One short of 200!! Two of them are by Crassus Pauper and are impressive indeed. He has reached 100 prosperity within 11 years in two different maps! An amazing feat!
My mailbox is empty!
Where’s he talking about? The downloads section of course. Perhaps I could mention here that it’s the largest you’ll find anywhere on the web?
How does this work again?
Posted on October 15th, 1999 by Angel Reckless Rodent
Well, since it’s been so long since I last did this, I hope I haven’t forgotten how it all comes together. Anyways, here goes nothing:
Angel Et Flavius’s Where in the World thread is still going strong. It’s still in installment 12, but it looks like it’ll head into 13 (lucky for some) before the day is out. Definitely a record.
We also have news from the campaignmeister himself, Thanh2002, who has decided to postpone his Halloween Campaign to Thanksgiving. Follow this link to sign up for what might well be one of the last C3 campaigns ever – don’t forget that Pharaoh will hit the shelves sometime in the next month (though I think we can safely say that it isn’t going to be out in October). Perhaps it’s time to start thinking about Pharaoh campaigns?
Our hosts, GameStats, have a contest this week that all Age of Kings fans (of which I am one – that game is just awesome) will be interested in. Click here to see how you can win a copy of the strategy guide before it hits the shelves. Here’s more info, courtesy of Justice T:
Win A Copy of Ensemble Studios Official Strategies & Secrets to Microsoft Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings Books
Talk about a mouthful! We have 7 advance copies of this book and 7 posters to give our readers… and its free!
Man, I’ve got to get used to using FrontPage with German menus and buttons…

Ok, so I missed it yesterday…but CIIIH is celebrating its first birthday! Way to go everybody! Let’s have another party. What do you say HA Wendoolicus?
As usual, the Community Forum is one of the liviest and most sought after at CIII Heaven. It seems to be the permanent home of many of you, especially Wendoolicus. Wow, she sets up a party recovery topic one minute and the next it has over 35 posts! Join her here and chew the party fat. Meanwhile, Angel Et Flavius’ ‘Where in the world’ series is about to hit 100…see it happen here. Thanh2002 is going strong in his fourth installment of History walks. To join in that, saunter over.
Et Flavius Angeled on CIIIH’s Big Day!
Posted on October 12th, 1999 by Angel Alexander I
That’s right: Caesar III Heaven is one year old today! Congratulations to all the people working for and visiting the site!
Et Flavius shall henceforth go forth as Angel Et Flavius, Techmaster General to Caesar and Pharaoh themselves (The Techanator for short). Welcome to the Angelic flock my friend but, remember, don’t work too hard now.
Seems that the Pharaohs liked to swing so Impressions have brought out a new downloadable tune right here. Join Et Flavster in part XII of the ‘where in the world’ series by clicking that mouse on this spot. Want to wager how long it will be before AEFster will have to open up part XIII? Anyway, now you know why we had to make him an Angel. 🙂

Hi fans! I lived to see the day that I could leave the mummy infested dunes of Pharaoh and take the road that leads to Rome. Here’s the news.
HA Wendoolicus is currently recovering from her bash with the entire Roman Empire right here but that doesn’t stop her from contemplating a major party with the Pharaohs themselves. Great initiative Wendster. I’m looking forward to seeing the pyramids themselves party.
Download top ten
Posted on October 10th, 1999 by Angel Jayhawk
Okay, I didn’t put them up last week, but here are the results for this week.
Scenarios downloaded between 1999.10.03 – 1999.10.10
Number of scenarios downloaded: 4786
Number of different scenarios downloaded: 379
As of September 1st 424 scenarios have been downloaded for a grand total of 19636 downloads.
Tomorrow will see me back in my more familiar setting. Sanddunes, a wide river and pointy things sticking out of the landscape. It will be good to be home…
Back to having painted fingers…and toes
Posted on October 9th, 1999 by Angel Jayhawk
I look like I had a run in with a can of henna , but I actually spend time lacquering the floor. Sadly enough this will keep me busy for the next week or two. So you can expect more short updates.
The Game Help forum has some discussions about the map editor and encasing cities in walls to keep them safe from attack.
The Technical forum tells you all you wanted to know about keeping your CD drive clean.
The Community forum has passed the 2000 threads boundary, again, and is still rife with stories, games and gossip.
A short news flash
Posted on October 8th, 1999 by Angel Jayhawk
To be bluntly honest I haven’t much to say tonight and still have a lot to do. However, it seems most of the forums comply.
The Technical forum has some hints on keeping your CD-ROM drive happy.
The busiest place on the forum remains the Community one. Among the current features are: A Pharaoh Pholl, the Pharaoh demo (which includes tips on getting the most out of your system), and, of course, the games.
Cherub breaks the 3k posts barrier
Posted on October 7th, 1999 by Angel Jayhawk
Cherub ET Flavius seems to be recovering from his root canal sufferings. He’s back to posting and blatantly broke the 3000 post barrier. I can remember talking to him, not so very long ago, and discussing whether or not to throw a millenium party.
Apart from that I think everybody and his (or her) dog is playing the Pharaoh demo. There have been no posts on the Game Help forum as of 2:03 this morning.
Luckily there still seems to be some life in the Community forum where people are busy playing games. Word games, history games and of course “Where in the World“. This game is now in it’s eleventh thread. Which means that it has already passed the 1.5k posts mark. An achievement that will likely never be equaled.
Posted on October 6th, 1999 by Angel Jayhawk
There’s also another new game in town. “Which Word” This might be something to keep you busy while Cherub ET Flavius is recovering from some serious hardware work.
Another thing you might be interested in, is Angel Zen managed to locate the problem that was causing some of us hardship on the forums. You might want to give him a big “Thank you” in the Test forum.
Posted on October 5th, 1999 by Angel Jayhawk
You should definitely have a look at the results of all the hard work Fiona did. The Film Poll results are on display. There’s quite a list and leading from the rear is one of my favourites: Highlander.
Who ended up on the Number One spot? I won’t tell, you just have to browse over…
In the Game Help forum Proconsul Creaticus Dania ends his quest for lion tamers and others ask questions about map editors, patches and how to achieve your peace rating.
The party’s over…
Posted on October 4th, 1999 by Angel Jayhawk
Or is it? There’s a rumour going on that it will be continued so you may need to have a look for yourselves.
Talking about rumours, several people have put the rumours to the where about of the former angelic duo, Abelius to rest. It seems Abel is stuck in Germany, while Angie is still in the US. Well, I wish them well, and hope to see them someday on the forums again.
Apart from that I’ve got a message for all of those that haven’t gotten the Pharaoh demo yet. I received another email this time listing the following download sites:
CIII Swings on All Continents!
Posted on October 3rd, 1999 by Angel Alexander I
Forum party is in full swing and a blast thanks to Wendster’s wonderful party decorations and, of course, the picture of her playing with me. To join in the gameplay, hurry, you just may be in time so click here.
I didn’t think a forum party was going to be enough for the likes of me so I invited 15 of my students over for an end of semester party. Yikes, I don’t drink I’ve fully recovered. Have a look at the picture of who I thought was my favourite student telling me how sadly mistaken I was.
