The Death Of The Romans.

Author File Description
Mestereo Ray
File Details
Climate: Central
Difficulty: Very Hard
My scenarios will always be very hard. This is a taste. If you keep on playing it you'll have many surprises! The Seleciuds are the foes and you are the bait which will be eaten by teir mighty forces.

Map Design2.0
Playability: 3
The map plays pretty well, for novice players the invasion may be a bit too much. Peace at 100 means you need to play quite long. The map is hard, but definitely not very hard. Culture is nicely low, just adding a few extra schools, theaters and libraries bring it up to level without needing culture parks. Prosperity at 59 is a bit low, an all LI city will do that just fine.
There is a very large invasion early in the game, but as it came at the far side of the river in my case it didn't hurt. If it would have hit the city, the mission would have been impossible.

Balance: 2
Ray is a bit obsessed with the military aspect, and C-III just isn't the game for that. Large invasions will frighten off the novices, and bore the cracks. The economic part is much too simple, requests are feeble, only the troop requests are a bit more substantial. While the troops are away there are several invasions, that can quite easily be handled by the remaining few soldiers and some towers. Culture is OK, prosperity is a bit low in a city where you can have large palaces. I started feeding everybody on fish, only put in a villa block for fun.

Creativity: 3
There are several funny features on the map, but they do not seem to have a function. Overall the map looks very artificial, big straight coastline. The river looks like a canal, the lakes are just simple rectangles.

Map Design: 2
For a military map the lay out contains too many natural bottlenecks. As stated it has a very artificial look to it. The native village has no function.

Story/Instructions: 2
There is no real story. Who wants death to the Romans and why? Certainly not the Seleucids in Gallia in 350BC, since they lived in Syria from 311BC onwards. If you want a military challenge there are better enemies to be found. Any good scenario starts with a good idea that is developed into a good story, from which the map is derived. The idea, many attacks, is OK, but since there is no story the challenge is vague.

Additional Comments:
In spite of my negative remarks above, I think Ray has done a good job for what I believe to be his first mission. Pity he didn't have more advice from experienced designers, so he could have made a map that is more enjoyable for a larger audience. With a little tinkering this one can be improved considerably. I'm not sure the map is OK, since I missed out two invasions, thgey were reported but never came, and the invasions in the NE were indicated to come from the South, but showed a disarranged screen. Fortunately I found them before they could cause real trouble. If you want to see my final save, send me a mail.
