The Conquest of Hispania

-- Mission Briefing --

"Rome is expanding fast, Governor! Your are now assigned to Carthago Nova, the former Carthaginian colony of Qart Hadast which has recently joined our empire , where I expect you to build a prosperous and industrious city that will allow Rome's splendor to shine throughout Hispania!"

"Err, of course, the Carthaginians did not really appreciate us taking over this rich province, and they will certainly try to take it back. Their Iberian allies are also known to be very active in this region. Do not neglect in any way the defense of your city."

"I should hope however that the military aspect of this assignment will in no way keep you from building a prosperous city. The land, the earth and the sea hold large enough varieties of ressources. The only thing you could be lacking is iron. The neighbouring will be glad to sell you weaponry, for a price, but Rome should be able to trade some iron, if the long and dangerous sea route can be compensated."

There you go, my second scenario, I hope you like it.

Map Design4.0
Playability: 4
The scenario may be a bit hard for not too experienced players. Given the size of the population required a large part of the map must be covered with housing, support buildings and industry, leaving little room for defense structure against the frequent and rather substantial attacks from various directions. I made use of the many bottlenecks that are more or less naturally present, and added some walls to lead the attackers to infantry backup up by javelins, but most players will feel more comfortable if they can rely on towers to kill the elephants. I finished in 179BC, shortly before the really big attacks come.

Balance: 4
Requests could be more varied, I do like the larger sizes. Ordinary career mission don't build up too quickly and once the city is developed, most requests can be met easily. In fact with just marble and fruit, which I wasn't using yet, for this map it is still a bit simple.

Creativity: 3
Rather standard assignment, I guess that is waht the designer intended. Better than the average career map.

Map Design: 4
Nice map with much realistic detail. I would have expected an explanation why timber is only available from imports with so many trees ;). A slightly bigger map would have provided the player with more options.

Story/Instructions: 5
Good historical detail. Fits in well with the career description, reference to other missions would give it some extra flavour (since your father did so well in Capua, Caesar now expects you to do even better in Spain ...).

Additional Comments:
Another great map from Barberousse, a nice addition for those players who have gone through the ordinary career twice, and are looking for more of the same, maybe with a little bit more of a challenge. I would have left out the hippodrome, I'm not sure they date back to that period, there surely was none in Carthago Nova, and there is already little room on the map. The list of price changes includes some products that aren't traded.
