Caesarea Harbor of Africa
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
180 BC
Desert province Medium sized province
Local goods: wheat, fruit, meat, olives, iron, timber
Mission Briefing
================
Fortune is smiling upon you for your next assignment. You are given a peaceful river delta on the shores of Africa. Your mission is to create a prosperous harbor that will fulfill Caesar's needs for his expedition in Africa.
Although the terrain is somewhat "harsh", geologists have discovered vains of iron ore of formidable quality. Do not be suprised if Caesar asks for some of your iron ore to forge the needed equipment of his troops.
You will not have to fear any millitary threats. You will only have to tame some of the natives that live in the delta but I'm sure they won't stop you from completing your mission.
The only downside of the project is that the people who will immigrate to your city do not posses the skill to make finished goods.
note:
Housing level is capped to Grand villa due to lack of entertainment. And you will have to work on your city wide coverage to maintain them.

Playability: 4
Plays quite well. There are always issues with large amounts of natural (rock) formations, and this map is no exception. It plays quite well, except for some "dead zones" whereby marketeers get confused and do not make it to granaries due to pathing confusion. This is normal in a map like this however, and can be fixed by changing the road network.
Balance: 4
Very well balanced, except for favor and milestones. There is really too much favor to go around, all the while the milestones dates are far too spread out for this map.
Creativity: 5
Nice in every way.
Map Design: 5
Well designed map. Challenging to reach the population marker and still achieve the other ratings.
Story/Instructions: 4
These were fine.
Additional Comments:
This map is quite challenging. Your only export of merit is iron (you could export fruit as well) and it is necessary to import pottery, overpriced furniture and oil (and wine if you go the patricians route which I did not). Money is a little tight, and you are required to quickly increase the level of housing to at least casa level (or better) to generate enough taxes to cover the imports. Space is limited and with no theaters (or hippodrome) your culture is capped at 75 (with 60 required) and your housing blocks must incorporate space for the entertainment venues. The size of the amphitheater, and especially the colliseum makes this map extra challenging due to the space requirements. When I first looked at the map I was unsure whether there was enough space for 4500 people and buildings. There is room, but you must be careful when/how you build. My first (and probably only) go at this map fell short of finishing at the earliest time in both population and prosperity. I did finish 12 months past the earliest finish date as my population topped 4500 in dec and the end of year prosperity check put me over the required 70. Prosperity and population are the two harder aspects of this map.
I quite liked this map, found it fun and a good challenge. Overall difficulty, 9 to 9.5 out of 10, and it never got much easier over the years, keeping you working and the pressure on. I recommend this map for anyone who has at least completed the peaceful missions. It is probably too hard for someone who has not at least done those already.

Playability: 2
From a technical perspective it plays just fine (Julius). I have some beef with it though:
Collapsing mines are just a giant nuisance, same with rats in the water. Instant turn off for me. The first is basically just micro money reduction and the other one is practically not controllable. Both are more annoying than difficulty increasing.
I would also additionally deactivate the barracks, since there is no military threat. This was probably a simple oversight.
Caesar asking for timber is also weird, since there is no other incentive to fire up a wood economy. You just build it to make Caesar happy. The fruit and iron made much more sense.
Balance: 3
Pretty much neutral. It wasn't all that hard for me, but generally pretty balanced.
Creativity: 4
I liked the disabled workshops and entertainment buildings, forcing me to think differently.
Map Design: 4
Very nice looking for a desert map. I also liked the high ground. I used the northern plateaus for a whole lot of small insulae and the southern one for my patricians. Diverse housing from large shack to small casa in between.
