After your co-consul has been given his task, you listen to the Senate speaker as he tells you your task. "Once again the Republic has dire need of your services. Consul Lucius Cornelius Scipio has drawn the assignment of dealing with Etruria while your task, Gnaeus Fulvius, is to be Samnium. Our constant wars with the Samnites force us to develop a strong military presence in their area. We need the colony of Luceria to be developed to the northeast to strengthen our defenses. This area is rather poor in resources with only clay, wheat and fish available. Capua is the only city available to trade with in the area. Weapons are scarce but iron can be imported to produce them. Even though the area has dense forests the wood is unsuitable for commercial use. Local natives are available to trade with. But rampant disease has apparently driven them mad. They constantly attack any settlers they encounter without any provocation. We anticipate hostilities with Samnium to break out soon. This is why we have called upon you, our most able general, to handle this difficult task. Will you accept this mission for the glory of the Republic? You remember the bitter defeat and the unbearable surrender of the Roman Army at the battle of the Caudine Forks. You have long vowed to avenge the Roman Army and defeat the Samnites once and for all. It seems as if Mars is finally offering you a chance to have your revenge. "Senators, I gladly accept this task. I solemnly promise that Samnium will no longer threaten Rome!"
