THE MARIUS CAMPAIGNS (104 - 101 B.C.) ASSIGNMENT #1: AQUAE SEXTIAE, 104 B.C. A matter of grave urgency has come to the attention of the Senate. The Cimbri and the Teutoni from Germania Superior have invaded Roman-controlled regions of southern Gaul. They threaten our northern borders as well as our land routes to Hispania. You -- Gaius Marius, military hero and newly elected Consul of Rome -- must deal with this grave threat. On the Mediterranean coast of Cisalpine Gaul, you must set up camp, raise an army, and push north into the wilds of this inhospitable land. Build a garrison town, Aquae Sextiae, along the Rhone River and from this base drive the Germanic tribes back across the border. Expect trouble from the local tribes as well; they will no doubt rise up in sympathy with the Germanic invaders. You won't be building a major city here, Consul Marius -- just a military colony. However, while you are in the region, you may as well harvest its resources. The imperium is particularly in need of timber right now, so expect to hear from us on that score. Your settlement will only be considered successful if it achieves a garrison population of 2000 within seven years, along with an imperial favor rating of 80. Achieve a rating of ten in each of the other areas and you'll be doing just fine. We'll be waiting comfortably in Rome for news of your progress. ** NOTE #1: THESE LEVELS ARE MEANT TO BE PLAYED WITH ROAD-BUILDING DISABLED. THIS IS NOT A MISTAKE. ROMAN ENGINEERS HAVE ALREADY SURVEYED THE AREA AND THEY HAVE PROVIDED THE NECESSARY ROAD GRID, ACCORDING TO ROMAN MILITARY SPECIFICATIONS.** ** NOTE #2: IT IS POSSIBLE TO WIN THIS SCENARIO BEFORE THE TEUTONI ACTUALLY INVADE. TO ENJOY ITS FULL MILITARY COMPONENT, YOU MAY HAVE TO DELAY YOUR PROMOTION BY 5 YEARS. ** |
