This is Part 3 of a three part series. Part 1: The Rise of Sulla Part 2: Sulla at Athenae Part 3: Sulla Triumphant Imperator Sulla! During your prolonged absence in Achaea, the worst has happened. The Marians have seized Rome, driven out or murdered all of your allies, and we, the optimates who support you, are powerless to provide assistance of any kind. You must return at once to Rome -- but when you do, you'll find yourself caught in a pincer attack of Consul Carbo's Gaulish allies from the north, and Marius the Younger's Roman legions from the south. The only way to win is to pacify Italia and prove once and for all that you, and you alone, are destined to be Rome's first Dictator for Life. Details of this crisis, and a description of what you may expect in Rome, are contained in the attached Assignment Briefing. Do not be long in coming, Sulla. The future of Rome depends on you! |

First off, let me preface this by saying that I should have taken the time to post this review a long time ago. Still, better late than never!
Mr. Farrell's C3 scenarios are true gems of creativity based in actual history. They have always inspired me, and remain the benchmark I strive for when designing my own custom scenarios/campaigns. Perhaps the recent interest in the upcoming C4 game will inspire some of you to play C3 again, and if you do then I highly recommend all of his scenarios available here.
Playability: 5
The fun is endless as you battle against barbarian and Roman invasions coming from different sides of the map. However, if you don't enjoy combat, steer clear of this scenario!
Balance: 5
A true challenge for those of you who consider yourself military experts of this game! Hard, yet winnable.
Creativity: 5
Outstanding creativity. The way in which he simulated the 'civil war' that triggers invasions from Rome is very slick.
Map Design: 5
A beautiful map with tons of tactical and strategic options.
Story/Instructions: 5
The true history behind this scenario is explained and meshes well with the gameplay. The readme file included is good.
Additional Comments:
I also recommend playing the two earlier scenarios in this 'Sulla' historical series.

Plays fine and as intended.
Balance: 2
This map really is not balanced in any way, see below for more info. The military aspects were again made simple due to the map geometry (trees, rocks, water).
Creativity: 3
A nice idea, which unfortunately was not fully achieved.
Map Design: 5
Another very nice looking map in the series.
Story/Instructions: 4
Glad to understand this map from the get go. Of course, the expectations were never realized, they could have been for some players.
Additional Comments:
The ratings are again far below any real benchmark like the first map of this series. Here they are 4000 population with culture - 30, prosperity - 20, peace - 15, and a whopping 0 needed for favor. This one rating in conjunction with the other low ratings destroys any balance. The idea behind having a number of requests for 500 items all due within the first couple years of the game as well as large force attacks needing armies is of course supposed to provoke caesar. However, it is possible to finish the map before Caesar's amies show up. There are a handul of attacks in this timespan of 5 years, and they are all easily defeated with only a few javelin forts, running to the area after the attacking armies enter the map. One barracks is sufficient for every map in this series.
Having said all this, the map is interesting in the number of possible ways it can be played. I continued for 5 years after finishing the map at the earliest possible time (which happens to be exactly 5 years before the "survival" time limit) and fought caesar twice, then won a distant battle and fulfilled (late) only one moderate request for 50 pottery to regain caesar's trust. There were many reasonable clay requests which I did not bother trying to complete, but a favor rating of at least over 60 is entirely possible.
In addition, a 100% speed replay of my first save in feb of the first year focussed on meeting the large attack on Capua requested in August of the first year. For this run only I used 5 barracks allowed both the first two attacks to be defeated and then 4 armies were sent with 13 months left to win the battle. Doing this allows for one to take much more time than the minimum before Caesar's legions appear and again never see Caesar's legions at all if any of the the more reasonable requests are fulfilled.
This map would have made an interesting competition map to see who could get the highest favor rating. As it stands currently, it is at a difficulty of 7 out of 10. I would have put it at 4 or 5, but if you make a mistake and have to face Caesar as well, then it becomes more like a 7 or 8, of course, you could always take any map and force Caesar's attacks with poor play, here your leaway is simply much less.

WARNING - SPOILERS
I completed this using multiple barracks trick. I do not know if it can be done using single barracks. Other than that it is very easy map.I Used of towers to fend off legions twice.
Balance: 4
What for Caesar demands if you cannot fulfil them

Additional Comments:
If you fail to give caesar large force in beginning of the game, you are sure to get failed in this mission as caesar demands 500 oil 500 pottery and so on which one cannot fulfil. So take care of legions as they are sure to arrive with help of 12-14 towers and troops. \
My final pop - 5000
Pros - 55
