Marseille is a very important port city in modern day France. There were many reasons for that. We are about to find out the Roman's version of those reasons.
The main point of establishing Massilia is not to have as many citizens as possible, but rather to build a well-planned city with a pleasant layout. The target population is just 6,000, but you are welcome to go a lot higher than that. The highest rating you would need to achieve is Peace, with Prospertity coming in second, while others are average in requirement.
Massilia is not entirely safe. Expect attacks from enemy armies.
The land can be categorized into 3 parts. There is the outskirts, the inlands and the shorelines. The outskirts have nothing much of interest, except that the only woodlands are located there. In order to get timber, you would need to build there, but it is also close to the border where enemies invade from. The inlands house the most fertile farmland, and is where you would want to expand for farming purpose. However, since this is Marseille, the shoreline would be your best interest. There are ample spaces for shipyards, wharves and docks as well as bridges.
