A contest with a difference...
The 3x100 relay!!

"Pharaoh Nebka is gravely concerned. While his enormous tomb at his capital Menat Khufu continues to proceed, the unfortunate death of his chief vizier, who had been directing the supply of resources to this massive project, has meant that the flow of stone and wood to the immense and sprawling construction site is drying up.
"At the same time, Pharaoh is alarmed by the reports that the Libyans are redoubling their attacks on the caravans from the African interior, which supply Egypt with much of her luxury goods.
"Pharaoh has decreed that the Libyans must be crushed, and crushed with all possible speed. To this end, he wishes you to establish a colony at Selima Oasis, where your army can both safeguard the African trade routes and support the advance of Nebka's foremost general, Marsenant, as he advances up the Nile towards Nekhen and beyond. Although Selima Oasis has sparse natural resources of its own, the few that it does feature are exactly what Pharaoh needs.
"Pharaoh's plan is simple. You will serve as a forward supply post for Marsenant's forces as they advance up the Nile towards Nekhen, Abu and Dunqul Oasis. Marsenant has the authority of the Pharaoh to requisition all the military resources he needs from you, be they soldiers, weapons or other martial supplies. At the same time, you will support and protect the precious caravan routes into Egypt from Iken and Pwenet.
"This will be a difficult mission. But Pharaoh also has one last task for you. Pharaoh has decreed that Marsenant should receive a mudbrick pyramid of his own as a tomb, an honour almost unheard of for one outside the royal family. Pharaoh requires that you construct this tomb for him, that Marsenant might spend his eternal sleep close to the battlefields where he is winning the greatest victories of his career. While Pharaoh knows that such an undertaking will be hugely difficult in an area without any local supplies of clay, he will endeavour to send you as much support as possible without drawing undue attention to the new construction project.
Pharaoh knows that this will not be an easy mission. But he has the greatest confidence in you. Do not fail him."

Ok, I don't know how many of you read the (now removed) post I wrote in this thread but if you did, you must by now have twigged to what this post is about. For those of you who didn't read the above thread before the important bit was deleted, here's the catch:

This contest will not start in the usual way. Each player who wishes to participate will have to register first, and then on the first day of the competition each player will receive the save game file by e-mail. This is important as each save file will have to have a unique ID number (more on that later). The contestants will obviously build the city in the usual way, for ten years, until they receive a December save notice for marble rather than sandstone. At this point, they save their final game, and send the file back in to the organiser.

This is the point at which it gets radically different from most contests. Each map will be briefly checked to ensure that no cheating has occurred, and then the maps will be redistributed to totally different people! In this way, each player will then receive, by e-mail, a save game file which has the basis of a city built by a different player. They will then be required to build upon the city they are given, trying to work with what they have been given by the previous player.

All in all this event is designed to test the contestant's ability to think on their feet, build a working city with a low level of initial planning and incorporate the work of people with totally different mindsets into their own city. It will not be possible for a player to simply demolish the work of the contestant who played the map before them, since restarting a city a third of the way through the event would put the player out of the contest.

Scoring will be slightly complicated, but not ridiculously so. Players will be marked in teams - if one map is given a score of 100, each of the players who worked on that map will be given 100 points. However, since over the course of the three rounds the player will have worked on three different maps, each contestant would receive three marks for his/her three maps. Adding these scores together would give the final score for each player. This is much easier than trying to grade the player's individual contribution to a map, which would me messy and subjective. Marking them this way also removes any incentive for gamesmanship - it's in the player's own best interest to make it as easy as possible for the player who succeeds them. Minimizing the opportunity for collaboration between players (such as ensuring that no one knows which city is which, hence the ID number rather than "WinterPharaoh's entry") will also help minimize the opportunity for cheating.

While the possibility exists for cities to get lost/misdirected/etc, the chance is no greater than when sending out normal contest maps, and since the whole purpose of the contest is that the maps are supposed to go to different places, it makes it much easier to correct any mistakes!

The contest will obviously be run in three segments, and will probably take place during February/early March, for those of you who might be interested.

------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------------------

So there you have it. While this is by no means the 'official' registration, I would be most obliged if anyone who would be interested in participating, and available during the time above, would make a reply to that effect. I'm just gauging public opinion/support at the moment. If the general consensus is against a relay-style event, it could be run as a normal contest, with each contestant playing the full 30 years; but I believe that much more enjoyment would be had by everyone if we press on with the relay plan. Comments and opinions welcome, and if you would be interested in participating, please do say so ASAP. Thank you.

The only situation that has ever caused me to not submit a map quite honestly, is simply a lack of time. So many maps I've played, or started, and due to RL obligations, have been unable to devote the time neccessary which would enable me to submit a valid map. If you're talking about having only one week to do a map...I can tell you right up front, I'll not be able to play. Unless given a minimum of 2 weekends to work on a scenario, I'd be pressed for time to play during the week, my work schedule is brutal. Of course it all depends on the difficulty of the map as to how quickly it takes to develop a strategy, sometimes that can take a week by itself, with all of the restarts.

There has been a considerable amount of discussion on how this should play out and I think it's been very constructive. This is a totally new concept and I really think it has potential to be quite fun.

The only conflect I would have is the end of March around Easter weekend...going to Florida.

Thanks for the great discussions, it's been real, sorry I haven't contributed, but smarter heads prevail.

I'm glad to see the competition hasn't started yet. If it starts March 15 or later I would like to join. Am I too late?

Owing to personal obligations, I find I will not be able to participate in this competition afterall. I hope this is enough notice, and I apologize if this will cause any inconvenience.

Hello. I'm definitely a novice at Pharaoh, but this competition sounds like a lot of fun. I'd like to sign up for it if I'm not too late.

Heck WP, just take down the numbers of everyone's credit cards and any dropout has to pay a fine of, say, $100! Money to be used at a 3x100 relay recovery party

Smile!

March is here and I patiently await the first map, okay not so patiently. Has there been a start date declard yet? As far as difficulty is concerned I would be happy doing either hard or easy.

I have bad/good news for you all.
I a going to have very difficult exams the next two weeks, and if this competition is arranged in those dates, I am not going to be able to be in it. When are you going to do this, WinterPharaoh?

The contest will start as soon as humanly possible after the BETA testing of the map is finished... which could be a while, or it could be tomorrow! I'll keep you posted.

I don't think he will let you, joshofet. First, you are in the competition, and that wouldn't be fair. Second, there are some BETA testers already.

You can BETA test it if you want, joshofet - I'd be delighted if you would!! But unfortunatley, it would give you an unfair advantage in the competition, so I would have to exclude you from actually participating...

Sorry if this has been said somewhere, i can't read the whole thread again at the moment!

When the map is ready does it get e-mailed to everybody or something? I don't want to miss the beginning of the competition and i'm a bit forgetful so don't always remember to check this thread for updates. This is the first comp i've entered so i don't really know how it works.

Thanks,

Rachel

I'm aware that testers can't play, I was when I offered assistance, now and earlier. I don't mind, testing can be just as creative. Send me the files WinterPharaoh if you want me to test them, you can find my e-mail in my profile.

Was there an answer to how long we would have for each section of the competition? I have to add that unfortunately i do not have much playing time per month so two weeks per would be absolute minimum for me and I may still be unable to enter one of the sections if I am busy one particular weekend. I do not want to withdraw until I have more details however.

Thank you,
Tae.

AFAIK, there isn't any absolute time for stage, but a common agreement on one or two weeks.

2 weeks would have to be the minimum to get a ten year game time map done and reasonable condition. I seem to only get about 10 hours a month tops to play CB games lately so 2 weeks would be so much nicer.

I have agreed to do the beta testing for this contest, but the map-file WinterPharaoh has sent me appears to be either corrupt or the wrong format. Can any of the other testers send me the file(s), WP appears to be out of office.

I have got the files now, and they are OK, testing soon ...

WinterPharaoh, are you around at all? I did email you a while back but didn't seem to get a reply.

Could one of the beta testers update us all on progress? In general, I mean, obviously. In fact could the beta testers identify themselves please, I've forgoten who you are (apart from Joshofet immediately above).

Have we any news on the potential date(s) for this competition? Are we talking about 3/4 weeks time or later this year; it's just that the potential contestant list may change as the year progresses and people's availablity changes.

Thanks.

WP has informed me that he (she?) will be away on a three week holiday, so that explains the radio silence. We all have our RL obligations.

I have tested the map he sent me, and IMHO there is still a lot of work to be done before we can have this contest. I don't know who the other beta-tester(s) is (are), I would appreciate if they would come forward here, or privately (check my profile for an email address). One thing that needs to be done at least is to test the relay map in relay mode, for which (at least) three testers are needed. Like the contest, also the design stage must be a team effort, if you are, or would be part of that team, please notify me, so we can keep the momentum.

Having said the above, it is my estimate it will definitely take one or two months before we can hold this event. So it might be possible to have it before the summer holidays, but if more thourough testing appears necessary, it might be better to have it start in September.

Hi joshofet, thanks for the information.

Looks like it may well be a summer/late summer competition, but hopefully the other testers will contact you for now, and we'll see what WP says when he/she returns from holiday.

Can someone tell me when we know the comp is ready. I asked above but don't think anyone saw. I can't keep checking this forum every day for the next 2 months, sorry. If i need to send an e-mail address to someone then let me know, that not a problem. Sorry i don't know how these things work, this is my first competition. However 2 more months of practise won't go amiss

aquae_sulis, this competition (being a 'relay' competition) is a bit different to the usual format for a competition, so we want to make sure the game to be played is as good as it can be. This, in turn, means that it must be properly tested so that the designer can make any changes that are needed. The game has then to be retested (sometimes several times).

As I said in the post just above yours "Looks like it may well be a summer/late summer competition" and this is the best guess at present based on joshofet's comment that "there is still a lot of work to be done". There is no clear start date at present.

So, please be patient, keep checking back here and all the necessary information will be posted in good time for all the competitors to be ready.
