This I knew. But for some reason I thought is was laterally from the road. I see now that it is also true diagonally from the corner of a road. Does this mean that you should only put one vacant lot for these particular houses and wait for them to evolve to 2x2?

Recently started playing this again after a long time*. I'm starting to fun up through the mission but also playing with ideas in the Sandbox.
Cant access the glyphs but I've been playing around with a housing block for an industrial or meadow farming district. Typically along an inlet.
Ferry Crossings across the inlet next the main river.
Dock next to one of the Ferry Crossings.
Up to six industries or Fishing Wharfs along the inlet.
Granaries or Storage Yards across the road from the industries or Fishing Wharfs. A 2x12 block of housing spaces to go up to the highest 2x2 housing unit possible separated by gardens 2 tiles wide.
Another 2x12 housing block across the road.
A 1x12 stretch of tiles with another road.
A row of 4 Meadow farms along thd road. These can be either a food item or something that gets further processing. Barley, Flax or Henna.
Plus all the needed services. And the required road blocks.
The block is reasonably compact with minimal intersections. Since the housing level isn't too high I only need booths.
Also using the mission editor I'll setup the needed Reed Beds, Wood Lots, Mines and Quarry locations close to everything.
