No one has posted any new housing blocks for a while, and I thought that it was time that someone (me) did so. You won’t find anything really new here, as this subject has been covered very well. Most of what I’m posting are just my variations on housing blocks that others have developed.

I have supplied the glyphs in this post with “tags”. To see what the glyph represents, just move your cursor over the symbol, and the tag will pop-up.

I have also posted housing blocks in the threads Baki-Balancing Housing Blocks and Ratings, Estate Block Alternatives and A New Concept for Housing Blocks.

Hi Sneferu and Welcome to the Forum

Vitru takes advantages of the fact that a recrutier only have to pass a house within t w o squares.

Which means that every building placed on the outside loop will get worker access

VitruviusAIA,

I have seen your quite impressive drawings. Too new to this forum to understand exactly I you all draw this stuff.
I was doing this way, too. I have not been through all posts yet, so please sorry for any redundancy. This to say that, basically, I think I have done a bit better for estates on two points:
- It takes me less space to get everything for 10 estates, at very hard level, including the zoo (or let us talk about 11 estates)
- bigger point is that your estates need to be no more than 2 squares away from any random walkers. In your final way, when you lack a commodity, house size will reduce to residence, attracted to best desirability, i.e. the statues, meaning third block from the road in your situation. They will vanish.

Cannot draw them. Available in Hetep-35000population. Would add my 10 estates remained at 200 population from Year 10 until 10 minutes before the end of the game (Year 83, an accident unattended).

As a newcomer to Pharaoh I wanted to tell you how much help these are VitruviusAIA, and to send a shout out to Grumpus as well. Started Perwadjyt (Archaic, normal) and solved it last night using a modified Grumpus block and information on farming from other topics. Ran up a huge debt on my way to victory and since this is the first time I have encountered the beautification things, I plan to create another modified block based on your drawing here. Then I will tackle Perwadjyt again and try to improve my score.

This approach helps me learn the game and gives me a starting point for the next mission.

Dadtoth, I liked your post.
I think you should download the enhancement pack. Really worth it.
Which games did you fail to win at very hard level (I am sure I guess for one of them)? I won all (meaning a thread of history, when I had won before at hard level, I chose the other city proposed). I would immediately say that one at least CANNOT be won at V.Hard level if you do not start with big money from former game.

Seen in profiles you are a compatriot...

VitruviusAIA,
this is a nice piece of work. I'm glad this thread bumped up again.
With all this new (at least for me) desirability maps (Temple complex, Storage yard, Booth, Bandstand, Pavilion) maybe it's time to reconsider housing blocks.

In reply #7 of this thread you mentioned, that your whole "Double Estate Block" - diagram "blowed up" when the Courthouse was placed ...
Palatial Estates Blocks are prone to this effect, since they use a lot of big elements. There have to be a "Kingdom Road" of 1x1 elements from the left border to the right border. Your Courthouse blocked this path. If you had placed the Courthouse before the neighboring Estates, the latter of both would be the culprit.
I had similar problems with a large statue in my Estate Block and fixed it (after 2 unpleasant hours) easily by appending a row of empty tiles (in your case 34 ).

I would love to have some separate glyph blocks for the various gardens and some to represent the plazas. I didn't see them on the legend except as groups. I can take apart some of the bigger blocks posted here but the legend could also be updated for these. It is a great way of taking notes and sharing ideas.

Ok, so the posts were not one file but all the little separate blocks.... One I didn't see was the larger garden you get when combining four smaller ones. Glyphgenerator didn't like this computer so if someone has a sample posted....

Hello meio_maluco and welcome to Pharaoh Heaven.

Here is a link to the complete legend: Legend.

Also, I have added “tags” to my posts. If you pause the cursor over a building, the name of the structure will “pop-up”.

Hi all

Hi V-AIA I,ve been comparing some of your earlier housing blocks with some of the later one's, although I havn't given it alot of though to date something is niggling me.....

Looking at some of your earlier estate blocks's there was always a few 'fancy resisdence' or below housing, this I believe was to give an 'internal' workforce to the housing block, on the later ones they appear to be all estates.....Althoulgh I havn't played with these later blocks in anger where do the internal services get there workers from as I though manors and above didn't produce workers and they dont cross roadblocks....

I,m sure there was no worker housing, although knowing my powers of observation I wouldn't guarantee it !!

Either that or theres something i'm not aware of....

Hi Rocky,

Although Manors and Estates do not add the total available labor pool they do still provide access points to labor. Many of us use blocks that would not function if this were not true. Hope this opens some new doors.

Rocky,
All buildings that have labor access share in the city-wide worker "pool". While manors and estates don't contribute to the worker "pool", they do provide labor access, so blocks with only manors and/or estates can work fine.

Hi Rocky,

I read in a thread once, believe it was either Mere or
AJ
, that even though 'estates' don't 'produce' any workers they are still sufficient for the labor seekers to be 'happy' - the way it was put was 'even though they don't work themselves, they know people that know people that work' - so, I believe, in an estate block you don't need a labor feeder house. You might still consider putting a 'butler building' in the vicinity - so the poor soul doesn't have such a long way home after work

C Franziskus,

I believe that you are refering to a statement made by SenetEr in his famous Housing Block Essay post.

“Note: Although scribes do not work, they still allow recruiters that walk past the scribe housing access to the labor pool. This is because, although they do not work, they do know people who know people. In this example, any recruiters who walk the road behind the estates will find employees from the overall pool the same as recruiters walking under the 'feeder' house at the bottom.”

You will find the “Note” in Reply #2 of the thread.

btw, do you have all the threads memorized - or how did you find it so fast

Since I have increased the difficulty level at which I play, I have been having trouble with some of my “standard” housing blocks. I don’t think that I have ever used the same block in two cities, so “standard” doesn’t really apply, but the concept does. The higher difficulty levels are less forgiving, and intersections within the block can cause serious problems. If I do have an intersection in a block now, it will be a one-tile dead end and the “loop” will only be 48 tiles or less. This way I can still be assured of perfect coverage by all random walkers. In my last completed city, I developed a block without intersections. It was similar to the one posted below. The desirability is good up to “Hard” difficulty, where I am now playing. This block will hold 2208 at Fancy Residence. The inner road loop is 52 tiles (21 x 7).

There are several “extra” structures in this block that are not required for Fancy Residences. I added a Mortuary because I design for “perfect” health coverage in my cities. There are 2 Scribe Schools and 2 Libraries in this block, and only 1 of the 4 structures is required for Fancy Residences. I added these to improve my Culture Rating. To provide entertainment points to this block, I am not relying on entertainment walkers that are generated by the Pavilion or Bandstand. I will get my entertainment points from the walkers traveling from the Entertainment Schools to the Stages. These walkers will take the shortest path (by road) from the School to the Stage. By locating the 2 Pavilions on opposite ends from the entrance to the block, I can be sure that every house will receive coverage.

[EDIT]

If you play at Very Hard difficulty, I recommend reducing the size of this block to 44-tiles (as shown in the example below). This block can evolve to Fancy Residences even at Very Hard difficulty.

VitruviusAIA:

I really like your blocks! I haven't tried them yet, but I will, for sure, use them on my cities. I usually follow your "Advanced Rules for Pharaoh", and use your blocks because they are quite good, they respect that rules, and also because I'm too lazy to design my own blocks (shame on me).

Keep the good work up!

OK I am still a newbie to Pharaoh. I am having a small problem in a few blocks I develop. Instead of getting a solid 2x2 house, I get 4 1x1's. Is there any way to force it into a 2x2, besides destroying it?

There are locations where low-level 2x2 houses will develop, and there are those where they will not. The painstaking Brugle method is to test-run to see where the 2x2s will develop, then put the early housing in those locations (to minimize consumption of "per-house" goods). Once you evolve your housing far enough, even the 1x1s will become 2x2s. Otherwise, no, you can't force the 1x1s to develop, though sometimes selective demolition will allow the remaining housing to evolve to 2x2.

I really like your housing block and admit to have used it in a beauty contest that Homegrown ran some time ago (The Alexandria scenario) and it worked really fine, I place 2nd

Note to everybody else: This block works excellent due to the no intersection layout - try it out sometime !!
