Time passes and once again I feel motivated to build another custom campaign for this great game.

This one will be titled "The Shaman of Yin Oasis". It will be different from my usual offerings. Instead of "Very Hard", it will be rated "Normal". I decided to tone down the difficulty this time for a variety of reasons, with perhaps the most important reason being the steady flow of new players trying Emperor for the first time.

The storyline of this campaign will be fictional, but it will be based on true events. In the mid 9th century CE, the Tang emperor Wuzong began a systematic persecution of the Buddhist religion throughout the Middle Kingdom. This led to the destruction of monasteries and the death and/or imprisonment of many Buddhist followers. This persecution ended upon Wuzong's death in 846 CE, but the damage had been done.

This is where the campaign begins. The new Tang emperor will send the player to Yin Oasis, located along the Hexi Corridor in western China. This oasis is the site of a former Buddhist monastery that was destroyed by the Tang. The player is ordered to build a city at the site, but there is a catch - a powerful Shaman who survived the destruction also lives there, and he must be appeased for the city to survive.

The scope of this campaign will be small, one map and three missions. The missions will have some scripting but not much, this will keep things in the spirit of 'normal' difficulty. And here is the biggest change you will notice from my prior campaigns - the missions will have NO TIME LIMITS on them.

The map will be 'enormous' size with arid climate. It will show ruins from the prior monastery that the player can remove or use as visual clues to decide where to build things (like monuments).

I have created a Gallery album for the playtesting, you can find it here:

I anticipate a release date in early 2019. As usual, I will make entries to this post from time to time to share my progress and thoughts. All of you are welcome to reply as well with your comments.

Hi Yahya. Yes, your timing is good. I hope you check the other CB sites too, because there are other seasoned designers who still occasionally make submissions to their download sections from time to time.

Good updates today. I have the campaign introduction text written, as well as the mission 1 intro and victory screen. The mission 2 intro is also done.

I started on the map! See 3 new screenshots in the playtest album: http://emperor.heavengames.com/gallery/album24

The map is in a very early draft form, but I shared this early screenshot now to draw your attention to how the oasis at the center will be the map's heart, and focal point for the whole storyline.

Ever since I began playing this game I have been in love with that one pinnacle that has the shrine at its peak. Now I will finally show that affection by using it as the highlighted map feature.

I'm making good progress on the map. It's probably about 70% completed. As desert maps go, it will have some challenges but remain in the 'normal' difficulty.

I have used the Chinese zodiac in the storyline of many of my previous campaigns, but this time it will play a more prominent role. How well a player knows the 12-year cycle will definitely be an advantage (or disadvantage). I added two screenshots to the playtest album that give visual aids on the zodiac. Viewable here:

I've finished the draft of the Yin map and did a first playtest of mission 1. So far so good.

There will be three missions in the campaign, and here are the working titles:

M1 - A Cursed Land

M2 - Bridges of Trust

M3 - A Shaman's Enemies

As I stated previously, there are no time limits on these missions but I am staggering the start dates of M2 and M3 to be 13 years later than the start of the prior mission. That should be enough time to eliminate overlap in game years, unless a player is really a novice.

So I have been reading about the Huang Chao Rebellion against the Tang in the late 9th Century CE. I am not going to be able to resist putting this event into the campaign. My challenge is to do so in a way that does not violate the 'normal' difficulty level. Here is further reading on the rebellion:

I also uploaded a map of it to the playtest album.

The map is done, at least the first draft of it. Playtesting will probably uncover some tweaking I need to do to it. I uploaded a mini-map of it into the playtest album, you can see it here:

Due to the small scope of this campaign, and the fact that I am targeting 'normal' difficulty in the design, my playtesting is going much faster than usual. Yesterday I completed a complete run-through of all 3 missions.

This means I will be releasing this campaign in a few days.

EDIT: I uploaded about a dozen screenshots into the playtest album, viewable here:

I finished playtesting yesterday, and now I just need to polish a few things for the download file. Unless something unexpected happens, I plan to release this campaign within 24 hours.

hi -- love the game, but having a problem. I'm in the second level, trying to rebuilt the Temple, and though I've got the first set of stone delivered to the site, the masons won't come out of their building to work. There are plenty of masons in the building (23 out of 27, I believe), and they're right next to the site, and there's clearly access, since the stone was brought there. I've deleted their building and reset it in different locations, both near the site and further away. Every other guild works fine...everyone worked to build the first level's monument -- but no masons were involved in that, just laborers, carpenters and ceramics guild. What am I doing wrong??

Hmmmm sounds like you tried everything but double-check that you have an intact road network from the masons shop to the entry point of the monument. Remove any roadblocks you see on the road network between the two. I would even suggest you use the shovel icon to COMPLETELY REMOVE the road network you have currently placed on the map between the masons and the monument entry point, and then entirely replace the road.

Also double check that you do not have stone set to 'stockpiling'. If some stone was already delivered to the monument then it doesn't sound like you have stone set to stockpile, but double check.

Finally, go to the monument ministry and check for messages there, just to verify what the monument currently needs to continue construction.

Hi -- thanks so much! I removed the road, and the Mason came out before I could even put it back!

Very much enjoying the game -- thanks for making it!
