Thanks Wend.
The walkers loop around the market. Not sure about the Tai Chi parks. In some blocks I've left out one and replaced it with gardens. A bit of road/gate in the outer wall made for access of the immigrants.

Hi there,

Just finished the "Budding of Buddhism" in which I used an Impressive 21 Impressive Compound-block. Thought to share that with others. I made this one to cash loads of money at an outrageous tax rate which it certainly did.

At the entrance of the block I put the tax office because I didn't find anther palce if I really wanted to have 21 of them. But it works perfect.

Perhaps you will notice that the Impressive Compounds in the Northwest doesn't touch the road. That's because I didn't succeed to get that annoying symbol (which symbolises the grand way), and now it also doesn't work. So I have replaced it with an flowering tree, but that's just to fill the gap. It's perhaps I have a European keyboard(livin in Europ of course) , and I do not have that symbol on my keyboard. Perhaps there are hotkeys?

Can anyone tell me what is the biggest Impressive Compounds-block made (with only one accupuncturst, one herbalist, ... covering the loop (if it is one of course))?

And can anyone tell me if the desirability of this block will do for Heavenly Compounds (I haven't got to them yet)?

I made this one to cash loads of money at an outrageous tax rate which it certainly did...

The trick is to keep the legend open while doing the code and, highlighting the symbol, right clicking to copy and then pasting it into the code.

Quoted from xtof:

And can anyone tell me if the desirability of this block will do for Heavenly Compounds (I haven't got to them yet)?

It depends on what difficulty level you're playing at. At Normal, the ones in the center are fine. Imperial Ways in front of the houses are usually enough for desirability. The ones on the corner are hard to tell. You'll have to try it and see. You'll also have to lose 1 house to place the theatre. If you want to know for sure, go to an open play map in the steel age and build it.

Yes it will, even playing on Very Hard.

You didn't say what difficulty level you are playing, but I wouldn't use this layout at Very Hard. You will not receive adequate coverage by the Inspector's Tower. Playing at Very Hard, it is absolutely necessary that both Inspectors (from an evolved Inspectors Tower) complete the loop on each walk. With this layout, the Inspector will only complete the loop if he walks in a counterclockwise direction. On a clockwise walk, he will reverse direction halfway around.

On lower difficulties, where the risk of fire/damage is less, you might get away with it. If the Inspectors ever get into a pattern where both of them take the same clockwise path, you are going to have a fire in your city.

Hi,

I came up with this block when I was playing with the glimphy.I added two inspector's towers for good coverage
I havent tested it but I think it should fully evole to Heavenly Compound on normal.
The gates should be set to accept market employees only

It won’t unless you add a Theater Pavilion. The Drama School doesn’t have to be in the block, but the Theater Pavilion does. The Drama School trains actors who go to the Theater Pavilion to perform. It is the Theater Pavilion that sends out the Announcer that must pass by your housing.

You won’t need two Inspectors Towers in this block. One will give you all the coverage you need. You do have some desirability problems for Heavenly Compounds, even on Normal Difficulty. There are 5 houses that won’t evolve, but it is easy to fix.

In lieu of the two Pavilions and gardens in the upper right of the block, place a T’ai Chi Park adjacent to the two corner houses. In lieu of a double row of gardens behind the two center houses on the right side of the block, provide 4 large statues. The 4 houses on the right side of the block, and the one above the Buddhist Shrine still will not have the required desirability of 80, but when adjacent houses evolve to Heavenly Compounds, the added desirability of those houses will be enough to evolve the rest.

A word of advise to all those that enjoy designing Housing Blocks:

The downside of using the Glyph Generator to design housing blocks is that it doesn’t take into account desirability. The Glyph Generator will allow you to place any level of housing in any location no matter if the desirability is there or not. Also, you can use the Glyph Generator to show combinations of Grand Ways and Imperial Ways at the corners of roads that are not possible to construct in the actual game.

If you really want to post housing blocks that have been tested to perform the way you think they will, you need to build them on a “housing block test map”. Choose the difficulty level and find an Open Play map with a lot of resources and land to build on. Build a nice city leaving ample room for another housing block. This is a test map, so use the cheat code if you want a lot of cash to make things easier. On your test map, accumulate an ample supply of food (with salt and/or spices), hemp, ceramics, silk, wares and tea. When you have a good reserve supply of food and goods, save the city as “Testing City”.

The Glyph Generator is a good design tool, but all housing blocks should be play tested for desirability and walker coverage. With a “Testing City” ready, it only takes a few minutes to verify the validity of your designs.

Hi everybody,Some peope seem to be eager to see new submissions, perhaps this might help...I have made some changes to my 21 impressive compounds block, and I Managed to make 21 heavenly compounds of it, really not that difficult in fact. I play at normal difficulty level and it works perfect. The improved inspector tower makes the loops in the two directions. One tile more, and he wouldn't do it in the two directions. Can anyone tell me what are the biggest differences between the difficulty levels (normal -> hard -> very hard). In a previous post s'body told me that if the inspector doesn't make the loop in the two directions the houses would get on fire at a higher difficulty level. That seems pretty fast to me !?As you can see, to make it possible to have 21 heavenly compounds, I have put again the tax office 'inside' the block. The theatre pavlion is located just at the entrance of the block and gives a good coverage of the loop. The market and the Theater Pavilion are covered by an inspector from outside.Any words of advice, comments or suggestions to make here??Thanks for giving comment,Greetz,Xtof(where can I find other housing blocks lay-outs on the internet for Emperor?)

Maybe I'm getting old but I can't find your inspector tower

It probably should be somewhere among your religions buildings.

Only comment I have is that I tend to place my tax office close to the entrance so the wood/paper delivery men don't have that far to walk.

Very nice, you put a lot in a small area. Check out MarvL site for other housing blocks. He has some great ideas.

Vriesea,
I suppose the Watchtower is in fact an Inspector tower. It wouldn't make sense to place watchtower behind a residential gate, since you can't let guards pass through - only inspectors and religion + market walkers.

xtof,
I prefer to build blocks with some space inside, with houses not so tightly packed together, but I really appreciate the efficiency of this design... however, I'm afraid it would be very complicated to find a location that would allow to place it with perfect harmony. I like the feng shui concept - certain basic elements or rules can be used always, but each location requires new design .

Hi,

Vriesea, very well noticed and Baltic, very good thinking; that watchtower has to be an inspector tower. I seem to confuse these two, lucky enough for me only in the Glyph .

Vriesea, yes indeed the tax office is not at the entrance of the block (even though it would be possible to do it); but on the other hand, the paper maker is not far from the entrance of the block to compensate that(near the market, but the Glyph didn't allow me to show everything I wanted).

Baltic, it's true that everything is tightly packed, but that's just the consequence if you want to obtain as much efficiency (and profit) on a (sometimes) small available space; that's just the whole purpose. But I tend to compensate that with beautifications on the outside of the block.

In the mission 'A palace for Xuansong' (where you get to build the palace in the city that you have build in 'The enlightene one') I achieved to build 13 Heavenly Compounds within the dimensions of the City Wall.
Vriesea -> For fun I have even placed within the block ... the paper maker .
Again everything is tightly packed, but the result is certainly worth seeing. You soon will be able to download it, if you want, at Emperor Heaven.

In fact, the Elite Block is one that I actually used in 'El Hoyo de los Pajaros', a campaign that you can download at Emperor Heaven (a really nice one; you will be able to see my result once I have posted it). Now we get at the Feng Shui, which is very important to me and is allways a chalange to achieve.

One of the strenghts of my design is (I think) that thanks to the fact that religion comes from the outside that it is flexible.
- A Daoist shrine is harmonious near rocks; and so is the Buddhist temple.
- You can place a Buddhist shrine vertually anywhere (when it matters) and you just have to keep the Daoist temple away from rocks (and when trees are in the surroundings of the rock you even have a higher chance to achieve Feng Shui).
-> So; one temple and one shrine of two different religions are easy interchangeable. The placement depends of the location of the rock.
=> What of course you have to respect is the amount of tiles (which is five) the inspectors tower is outside of the loop, in order for THEM to make the whole loop. Finally: if it's really necessary you just eliminate one Heavenly Compound to achieve your goal.

But, as you told Baltic, every location requires a new design; but it's the idea, the concept that makes it work. As for the location of 'A Palace for Xuansong', I managed (which I mentioned above) to place 13 Heavenly Compounds in a location filled with rocks. Perhaps you can donwload my version of 'The Enlightened One' and try it yourself. I wonder if you will succeed (that is at normal difficulty level; but if the dessirability is high enough (which I think it is), it certainly should work at higher difficulty levels).

By the way, thanks for the compliments.

Greetz,

Xtof

This is the first time i try to use Glyphy to generate the housing block, and it took me some time to know how to use
it.The following is my work. A 28*28 Square-Block.
There r something worth noting--
1). I place inspector`s tower outside the residential area,
so it is essential to place another 1^2 inspector tower(s) on the other side of the block(in the lower side), lest some buildings may not be able to get necessary service.
2).No guardtower is present inside the residential area.
I`d place one near the entrance if I think it is better to have one.
3).Thre are only 52 tiles in the residential area, so I place religious buildings and the market outside, but I place 1 additional ancestral shrine inside in case that the diviner suddenly loses her way and leads to devolution of the housing inside.

Welcome to Heaven samuelhs

To answer your query about the ancestral shrine in homegrowns block in post 1 he says

Quoted from homegrown:

Any of the 2x2 houses can be used for your in-block services (inspector, well, herbalist, acupuncturist, ancestor shrine, 2nd shrine, and tax collector).

So you just replace one of the houses with these other buildings as required and hopefully in a position where it suits the feng shui requirements of that building.

Still an elite HB~

I tested all the 3 HBS in the "The Grandcity" campaign downloaded here several days ago, besides, the difficulty is set to hard. One thing to emphasis is that efficiency is not the priorty in all these blocks.Instead, symmetry of housing position is the thing that counts.Nonetheless, all
elite houses can evolve to heavenly compounds and receive all services in timebefore they may devolve. Have a nice
building!!~

There's no need for the Inspector's road to even touch the Market Square, and Inspectors certainly don't need to enter the Market Square.

I'd move my roadblock down to the entrance of the Market Square, to keep the Market Workers from heading the wrong direction, and staight out the jog in the back road.

The other possibility is to place the Inspectors Towers adjacent to the Market Square and then force them to go outbound, which is the approach I've used in Lakeside MarvL.

I normally lurk, rather than post, but I'm feeling inspired, so:

While surfing this thread, I saw Nimlot Persson's small village, and also Jayhawk's idea of putting the market actually -in- the village to make it look more village-like. So, here's the layout that I'm trying at the moment:

I can just hear you muttering: its not very efficient ! But I've done efficient - and efficient is boring. Nimlot is right - small villages encourage you to make richly detailed cities, and make it much easier to achieve perfect harmony feng shui. Thanks Nimlot for giving me the inspiration that I needed !

I have played all of the CB games since Caesar III, and I must admit that my first reaction to Emperor was 'Ho-hum, more of the same'. But actually I am just beginning to realise how richly detailed Emperor is - it may just surpass Caesar III in my estimation as the best CB of all. If ppl haven't been trying small villages and perfect feng shui, I recommend it to those who are looking for something more.

Some notes about using this village: Since it doesn't hold many houses, start the city with a couple of these at the start of the game.

Following the advice of Grumpus and MarvL, (Thanks guys !) devote your early workers to making money, and buy food, if possible. Since this block is not very efficient, its easy to get bogged down with no workers and no money if you build too slowly.

I have not shown mill or warehouses. Thats because with only a small village to serve, the market ladies will walk quite far to get goods. So you don't need lots of mills / warehouses. You can add a second food market if you need to.

This layout leaves enough space for a grand market if you want more vendors.

Its important to get good desirability around the inspectors tower to get the improved coverage - the inspector's coverage isn't very good on the corners, even with such a short walker length. I have found that just adding walls around the tower is often sufficient.
