Elite Housing, like a Well, can only be placed over the water table and both have a FS of water.

Elite Housing provides its own water with a “private well” and doesn’t need access to the “community well” like common housing. It’s just one of the perks for living in Elite Housing.

Looks like shaun beat me to the reply, and with documentation. Well done.

Hi Shaun,
You'll have to remove one house for drama stage.

PS: About the Ancestor shrine coverage, the return journey can be a little long for diviner to complete the loop. Esp. on V Hard, coverage goes down pretty fast. Are you sure it works in vivo?

PPS: Also, in pre-paper age, confucian coverage may also present a few problems on 4th (or is it 6th) reverse loop?

Looking through this thread today, I noticed that I have never posted an Elite Housing Block here.

This block contains 23 Heavenly Compounds, has the desirability required for Normal difficulty (80) and is made with a 56 tile road loop.

Although all these blocks looks extremly nice, I find it almost impossible to use stuff like that in real gameplay if you, like me, require perfect Feng Shui in all my cities

You have to bend and shape most of the time

Of all the new features added for Emperor, I enjoy Feng Shui (and the individual crop tiles) the most. I agree that “standard” housing blocks are a thing of the past with the introduction of Feng Shui. This doesn’t make designing standard housing blocks unimportant however.

I keep several housing block layouts handy when I am planning a new mission. They remind me of the desirability necessary to evolve housing to the desired level and serve as a basic guide. For efficient in-game layout of housing blocks I believe that it is necessary to know the “rules” of Feng Shui and the Feng Shui classification of all the structures that will be included in the block.

In choosing a location for my housing blocks I consider things like: “The water table covers most of this area so this would be a good location for Elite Housing. There are a couple of rocks there surrounded by trees. I can place an Elite House near those rocks as long as there are trees present to shield the area from the rocks. After I have placed the Elite House, I can remove the trees and place the Inspector’s Tower.”

I also know that if I want a Buddhist Pagoda in this area covered by the water table, that I would need to be near rocks/cliffs or trees. Before I clear all of the trees in the area, I make sure that I leave a few to create a harmonious location for the Pagoda. The fact that you cannot use the same housing block every time increases the challenge and enjoyment of each new mission.

With the exception of one or two missions in which there just wasn't enough space to use it, I was able to get perfect Feng Shui using the square throughout. All cities were protected by city walls whenever possible.

I would find an open space big enough to hold the square, find spaces for the inspector's tower, tax office, daiost shrine (if needed) and then build the square around that.
It takes a little time, but is not all that difficult.

Examples of this block can be found in the downloads section of this site. They have been uploaded by Grumpus (me!) and cover the entire Song Jin campaign.

Altough I think that is a great achievement (I have often not been able to get Perfect Harmony), a good designer designs the map in such a way that Perfect Harmony is possible. If it is completely impossible, the design could have been better IMHO.

Nice blocks VAIA, I should really start playing Emperor again.

Same here, although i used a mixed non-standard block in only one mission (Dunhuang, IIRC) as game maps allow mission to be finished with a less demanding standard Vaia-common if map is small .

Greetings!

I've been experimenting with a sort of "hourglass" shaped block that is completely different than anything already posted...

It uses the fact that walkers give their services to houses up to 2 spaces away (as in Pharaoh/C3) even though in Emperor the houses themselves are always 2x2. Extra roads with no services on them are needed to give some of the houses road access (since, unlike Pharaoh/C3, every house needs road access or they'll go poof):

Imperial Way (V) Imperial Way (V)
Common Housing Common Housing Common Housing Common Housing
Common Housing Common Housing Common Housing Common Housing Watchtower
Common Housing Common Housing Common Housing Acupuncturist

Common Housing Common Housing Grand Way (E) Common Housing
Common Housing Grand Way (E)
Common Housing Common Housing Common Housing Well
Common Housing Common Housing Common Housing Common Housing Tax Office
Common Housing Common Housing Common Housing Common Housing
Imperial Way (V) Imperial Way (V)

The hourglass loop itself is 58 tiles long, so there are no problems with herbalist or acupuncturist coverage. There seems to be no problems with lots of twists in the road - I watched on the overlay the two walkers go around and around...

Some Important Notes:
1 - This is a work-in-progress. I am aware perfect feng-shui won't be happening with this block. I am aware it will collapse/burn up on higher difficulties. This post is meant to illustrate a different way to cram in more houses with one set of services. I could sit around for a few decades and make it rock-solid myself, but I would like input/improvements/help !
2 - Most of the desirability structures are missing. I just put them in as needed, for now.
3 - I didn't put in market stalls either.
4 - The residential gates for the market are obviously set only to allow market workers through. The one on the right side closest to housing lets religious workers and inspectors through. The final one on the right lets only religious workers through.
5 - The reason for the last gate is because the inspectors (it should be upgraded!) acts rather strangely. If they goes counterclockwise, they will go all the way around, but if they go clockwise, they stop at pretty much exactly the halfway point. Thus the second gate removes a few possible tiles from their trips, should they choose to start out that way. Also, the inspectors don't do a very good job on the housing furthest from the main loop. Maybe one of the houses on the inside line should be replaced by an Inspector's Post, but then there's no hope for perfect feng-shui and more desirability issues.
6 - The religious workers are *slow*. If the walker chooses to alternate directions, the housing at the ends will say they're devolving but they will get service before they actually do (at least, this happens on Normal difficulty).
7 - I'm not really sure how appealing (to the player) it is to have those random roads to keep housing from disappearing. It's almost too bad buildings don't need real labor access, or they could actually do something . Maybe they will be needed for extra hazard protection; I'm not really sure.

The block above, on Normal and with suitable desirability structures, will fully evolve to 54 Luxurious Apartments (3996 residents). Hazards are an issue, though, and so is feng-shui. Any input would be appreciated !

Playing around with a similar idea as in my last post, I came up with this block, which is stable on Normal. Everything evolves to Luxury Apartment if some 1x1 statues are scattered around the outside of the block.

If the priest from the Ancestral Shrine decides to alternate directions (e.g. clockwise then counterclockwise) a few houses at the extremes will devolve one level (to Ornate) before the woman comes by. She walks so slowly !!

Take a look at Extreme Zeus. It's one of my Zigzag series from Zeus/Poseidon. http://www.marvl.com/Serpentineum/ZigZag-Extreme-Zeus.htm

The housing dynamics are all the same, except that Emperor "fixed" the Water Carrier, Health exploit that allowed walker path lengths of up to 180 tiles.

Zeus Extreme carries the mother-in-law cottage technique to an, ummmm, extreme.

Caesar K:

Ancestral shrine coverage in your hourglass block could be improved by eliminating one road tile and moving the shrine down a tile. It's only 2 tiles less for the total walk, but it might do the trick.

D'oh! I missed the (great big) Daoist temple sitting there, so please ignore this comment!

Hi StenSture2,

and welcome! Perhaps you want to have a closer look at some of the blocks in the download section : http://emperor.heavengames.com/downloads/

There you can find a lot of inspiration and information on how to build a good looking and efficient city. Perhaps some day you will even post your own layout or ideas here in this thread.

Perhaps it is good to pick up some ideas and to make a block of your own, you will learn faster then you probably imagine...

Good luck and have fun!!
