Hey everyone, first post here. The zeus blocks threads have really helped out, but didnt see any on Poseidon. the science buildings are slightly different sized than the culture buildings, so i was wondering how certain blocks have been altered for poseidon.

This is my first inspiration. 34 houses go to townhomes with some outside desirability (avenues work great all the way around). For Poseidon Science structures, the Podium is the Bibliotheke, the elite house is the Laboratory, and the theater is the Observatory. The drama school can be either a university or a workshop.

Here a modified SenetEr block from Zeus. Just some notes since the gylphs don't have the Poseidon updates. The Gym is a University, the Theatre is an Observatory, the Podium is a Biblioteke, the Horse vendor is a Chariot vendor, the elite house in the bottom right is a Laboratory and the Drama School is an Inventor's Workshop. Overall it's a 11 elite and 28 common block, with 7 of the elite houses going all the way to Estates and the other 4 going up to Manors. It's been really useful so far in the expansion.

Personal preference, I use a Sundial in place of the garden above the agora, and Water Parks in place of the two beside the Infirmary.

Overall this block works really well, although, you will need to boost appeal around the edges. Usually just placing an avenue all around the perimeter does the trick, occassionally you need something extra depending on what else is in the area.

Lane, I have also seen the appeal at the ends of the blocks I've been using as well. I think part of it is the stupid Laboratory. Completely neutral appeal. That's a lot of dead space, would have been nice if they'd given us somthing for it... like enough to offset the Infirmary would be ok.

I've been working on the Monument placement, going back to studying fountains in CIII to get the feel for the area of effect I get from the Monument. Still usually leaves the ends a little low, but as you said, avenues along the back or even just a couple of 3x3's at the two ends seems to work ok for me.

I've just updated (in the last couple of weeks) my Foundry site (http://foundry.4mg.com/), adding all the toys for Poseidon. The 'standard' 30 house Common block I came up with for Zeus works quite well in Poseidon (Atlantis) as well, with only a few minor changes.

Right now I'm playing around with different designs for the Elite housing block I use, though my Zeus Elite block also works nicely in Poseidon (Atlantis) with only minor changes.

Here is a 7x12 (41 house) I'm using in BOA. May need some outside help with appeal depending on external environment. Use those monuments! Theater is an observatory, podium is a bibliothingy, and elite house is a lab. Tax office and infirmary, with negative appeal, are placed between positive appeal buildings. Tax office between podium and agora, infirmary between agora and observatory.

Here's the Glyphy you're trying to post. The secret is that you use Local Directory / Image while you're developing your image, but then you have to switch to Forum Directory / HTML Code to get the HTML that you'll actually post in the forum. If you look closely, you'll note that the referenced directory is /Tiles in the first instance, and /Ztiles in the second instance.

Homegrown's interpretation is much cleaner, so I supressed my intermediate version.

I'm still curious as to the benefit of an isolated elite house?

The 2nd theater (observatory) is a glyphic glych caused bythe the space in line 9 of Lather's text input. The vertical line of columns next to the Observatory also come out to make room for the fish pond (stone circle) and the bottom two houses.

Finally got that housing block fixed and repaired that post. Should have read the instructions! For those that haven't used the housing block generator, it really isn't that hard but you REALLY need to read and follow the instructions on the glyphy page. It would have saved me some time and effort. Still can't figure out the symbol (vertical line) for pillars though. Thank you to those that helped.

MarvL, the elite house is a lab.

homegrown,
If you put avenues all the way around you will be able to fit in 39 houses. I would show you my version but I don't have to time to put it in the glyphy.

Here is a 7x12 with an avenue around the inner road. I particularly like the way the walker buildings fit neatly inside the 7x12 arrangements giving them a more linear look. Only 36 houses though. Might be good for those that build tons of elite housing or find they have a higher population than they need with the 40+ housing blocks. Plus you can get away with having more husbandry and industry nearby making vendors more efficient. It's prolly better to build no more housing than you need to complete the adventure anyway. Theater is observatory, podium is bibliothingy, and elite house is a lab.

Ok... I dont understund how to use that generator but I will describe it... It can hold up to 1680 people in townhouse, you dont have to worry if it has resources, etc.
Itīs 6x10 and half, it all the services in the center and the inventor workshops, the universitie, and the granaries and storage outsoude. I hope its a Good block. But is worthless if you dont have too much space. Any opinion on my block will be welcme.

I have recently noticed that my water carriers don't make it all the way around the 7x12 blocks. I thought I had tested it but apparently not. They need reverse avenues like in the more popular 8x11 blocks to shorten the walkers' loop. Looks like the 8x11's are probably better when you need populations of 5000 or more. I just don't think 40 houses can be squeezed into a 7x12. Will see what I can come up with when I get more time.

I made a simple 8x12 similar to the SenetRe block only I put avenues all the way around the inner road rather than on just 2 sides. Water carriers and healers go all the way around in one direction but not the other. Must have something to do with which square they come out of the building combined with which direction they go. Any suggestions?

You'll usually have a Palace available, so you can collect all those lovely taxes. I usually play at Olympian, with Very High Wages and Outrageous Taxes, and an Estate generates 606 Drachmas per year in taxes. That adds up fast.

Boulevards and Avenues are a rotten investment. I don't use them anywhere in my city.

You won't want to plunk down your Elite Housing right yet, but you do need to know where to position the final block of Common Housing. Notice how the Theatre, Podium, and Stadium are at the center of the Pinwheel. Also, there's a bit of tricky design on the Infirmary and Fountain that uses an artificial loop to extend their coverage.

We're feeding the upper Food/Fleece/Oil Agora from the back alley, and we'll eventually switch the lower Agora to a back alley feed, when we need the central Storehouses for Armor/Wine/Horses. There's a temporary Agora, at the lower right, that will be replaced by two houses once the Common Housing block has matured.

This is the final piece of the puzzle, and it adds a Coil to the Serpentine. Don't forget to remove the roadblocks just above the Food/Fleece/Oil Agora. Now it's becoming obvious why we want to use a back alley to feed goods across the fence into the interior of the Serpentine.

Those are Heroes Halls just above the Palace, positioned so we can stretch the Housing loop by several tiles. Also, the Elite House just above the Agoras is actually the first house on both ends of the coil, so we can stretch the coil a bit more. The Garden areas at the top of the Glyphy are Quest Statues, merely used for Appeal and decoration.

There's a temporary Military Agora tucked into one corner of the upper coil, and two more tucked into the lower Elite Housing coil, near the center of the City. Notice how the Horse Ranchs (the L shaped Gardens) are stacked right near the two temporary Military Agoras.

Once the city matures, we'll tear out all the four temporary Agoras, and the extra Granaries, Storehouses, and Horse Ranches, and replace them with Houses.

Finally, notice how nicely the Checkerboard pattern works out. Neither Avenues nor Boulevards are used anywhere in the city. All of the housing units are fully evolved, perhaps with an Appeal bump from Aprodite here and there.

If you enjoy the leisurely exploration of ideas that you might not have considered, you'll enjoy our articles at Common Housing and Elite Housing.

Serpentine Layout

The Settlers Entry point on the Mycenae Parent map is left center, and the corner of this housing block is lopped off because it's located near the left edge of the map. If you've studied the Serpentine Layout in Tour, you'll recognize that we've merely reversed the Palace Block, and skewed the Agora off to one side.

In this city we have:

  • Fishery, Dairy
  • Carding Shed, Olives, Grapes
  • Foundry, Mint
  • Olive Press, Winery
  • Armory, Sculpture Studio

We can trade for:

A Athens Land
>Armor 12
>Sculpture12
*Marble 24+8
Olives 24

A Sparta Land
>Bronze 12
>Olives 24
Meat 36
*Wood 12+6

  • Hephaestus will be important for blessing the Metal Trades.
  • Athena will help with Olives, Olive Oil, and the defense of the city.
  • This is a defensive Military Adventure, according to the narrative, so Zeus will be pretty important.

Artificial Loops

Note that we're using an artificial loop to extend the coverage of the Random Walkers for the Fountain and Infirmary. The 12 o'clock position is ignored when the Water Carriers and Hygienists begin their tour, but once they've gone 27 tiles they'll look for the shortest return path, including consideration of the 12 o'clock position which is intentionally on a different roadway segment.

This is an excerpt from the first of three articles about Two Worlds Collide.

MarvL,

Have you actually had this "artificial loop" working in practic.

Seems to me that the fountain walkers and the doctor will walk the 27 tiles to the top of the left side and just turn around and walk back since the 27 tiles back is still shorter than the other side down and into the "side road".

I tried your block on "titan" level and never once did neither of the fountain nor the infirmary walkers circle the block. Both stopped at the top left corner and turned around

Maybe I just misunderstood something ??

Nimlot Persson: MarvL's fountain and infirmary should work but only in certain orientations. I believe the block as he posted it has north at the top right of the diagram. Here is why it works:

For most buildings, the point at which walkers enter and exit is the first road tile touching the building (not just on a corner) that you find when searching clockwise from the north corner. Fountains and infirmaries are an exception to this. The point where walkers exit is the same as for other buildings, but the rule for where they re-enter the building is different. The following diagram shows the exit and entry points for fountains and infirmaries:

Exit Points Entry points
N N
.12. 1234
8Fountain35Fountain6
7478

North is at the top left of the diagram. The program searches the surrounding tiles in the order shown (starting at 1 and counting up) and stops when it finds a tile that contains a road. All buildings except the fountain and infirmary use the same point for entry and exit (the one that a fountain uses for its exit).

Having different entry and exit points makes fountain and infirmary walkers behave differently than other walkers in typical housing blocks (often they will always walk the same way round a loop while other walkers alternate directions).

You can also use this this feature to make a fountain or infirmary walker walk a huge distance. Build a road starting at the exit point, continuing for a couple of hundred tiles and then returning to the entry point. The walker sets off from the exit point and when he wants to return to the building, the only way to reach the entry point is to continue to the end of the road.

This last feature is what MarvL is using. With north at the top right of his block, the exit point for the fountain and infirmary is on the road to the left of the building. The entry point is the road tile touching the north corner (top right) of the building. The walkers have no choice but to go round the entire block as that is the only way to get to the entry point.

There are plenty of pictures in my various article that show the Artificial Loop in action, and you can download any of the various saves if you want to take a closer look.

I completely agree with Nero's analysis of WHY the technique works, but my convention is rotated by 90 degrees to the right, so that the screen positions match those on a wall clock. Noon, in other word, is the top right corner of the housing block.

In Zeus and Poseidon, City North is in the upper left corner of the screen, and to match the glyphies to the screen you rotate them 45 degrees to the left.

Looking at the convention from a screen perspective, what you'll actually see is:

-----12-----
--11**01--
-10****02-
09******03
-08****04-
--07**05--
-----06-----

The important consideration is that TWO locally unconnected segments of roadway touch the Fountain and the Infirmary. Normally, corners (12,3,6,9) are ignored and the program examines the available road connections starting at position 1. The entry and exit points are usually identical.

In this special case, which is unique to the Infirmary and Fountain, the return path is evaluated starting at 0, which is the 12 o'clock position, so TWO locally disconnected segments of roadway are considered.

The Outbound segment can touch any tiles NOT CONNECTED to 12 o'clock.

The Return segment can touch any tiles CONNECTED to 12 o'clock.

An awareness of how entry and exit points are determined is quite important when you're laying out a city, and I often use a back alley supply road to service the interior of a city block when my Agoras are located on the East (upper right) or South (lower right) side of a Housing Block. There are plenty of working examples on my site.
