From those veteran players from C3 and Pharoah times,there are many new features in this game and waiting for us to discover,I start this thread,waiting for contributions.

#1.You can laying down everything you want to build when the game is set as "pause".You can also perform delete while pausing the game.No longer the need to set to 10% speed while doing these sort of things.

But there is also a "bad" news for competitions:no more free stuff available(no free gardens,no free delete.etc),though I feel quite relieved at this...

But you do have to unpause if you're setting up a housing block with elite housing and have just laid boulevards etc, so that the beautiful things can take effect.....

1.Herding animals will not go down elevation paths if a road is placed there.

2.Herding animal can't go through vineyards but people can.

3.Granaries set to get don't need a road to get to a storage facility.

4.Elite houses don't need access to an infirmary or a water carrier.

I bet there won't be half as many tips as for C3 and Pharaoh... this game is a lot more simple (maybe "straightforward" would be more precise).

OK, here is one: When building elite block that's supposed to evolve to Estates, always build one horse ranch very close to the agora - so that the Horse trainer starts out next time before a new horse is available in this ranch. (If you have more agoras - and more Horse trainer stands - it is probably not really necessary, but it helps a bit, too).

Here's a few:

1) Provide fleece to your folks as soon as possible, even if you have to import it. Tax income increases by a factor of 2.5 when you do so.

2) At the beginning of the game, set the wage rate to "very High". This will get you five more workers for every hundred inhabitants. The actual cost won't be serious, since, in the beginning, there aren't that many people working anyhow.

3) Start taxing right away. Palaces are much cheaper than in Pharaoh, and do not require any workers. If I'm paying "very high" wages, I'll set the tax rate at "high"

4) Unlike Pharaoh, housing blocks rarely provide enough workers to get both a food and an export industry going. If money permits, getting food should be given priority over developing industry.

5) When feasible, use two or more common agoras instead of a grand agora. You get more flexibility.

1. If at all possible, keep sheep and goat industry in one
area on the map. If not, add extra carding sheds or
dairies, to maximize production. (The herders will walk
the whole map!) Place distribution buildings by the
industries and fill them up.

2. Place sanctuaries where they will do the most good.

3. Ships pass over wooden bridges.

4. Delete the palace when some of your troops get stuck.
Just not during an invasion!

5. Athena's sanctuary is a major bonus for any city.

6. Towers do an effective job of animal control.

7. Give lots of gifts.

You need Athena for at least two Heroes, so if you can build her sanctuary, do it. Before the monsters attack.....

I find that whenever I need to summon Hercules I end up having to build a stadium tentatively (to provide excellent cultural access) then delete and move it over to my elite housing block later on.

This is a real cheesy, minor tip.
When my first housing is filling up, I hate putting down a structure prior to having the workers for it.

So I ready the building for placement, i.e. get the green ghost from the menu tab.
I then use the ghost to click on the industry tab so I can watch the unemployment number. You can do this without losing the building from your cursor.
When the unemployment number hits the number of workers I need, I place the building.

I then ready the next building in the same way and place it when I have enough workers.

You can use military to have control over unemployment. Towers(15 each),triemes(100 each),rabbles(6 per soldier) can take the umemployment down very quickly.

Winning Olympic games takes a big boost on your diplomatic figure(hosting and winning is even better),winning other games also helps,but not very significantly,nut I really don't know how to win every games(that leaves for Nero).

While sending gifts,never send gifts that they are not buying(needing),don't send them too frequently(I guess there is a 12 months/2gifts limit,as the festivals in Pharoah).Also,don't sent the same item in straight set,after two gifts of goods,switching to money,you'll never want to see your gift is refused

Biuld your city in pause, thats right...

When you start a level, pause it (press "P")- now build, no theat of war, fire, claspes and take you time...

1. Always send gifts once a year. Even small gifts, consistently given, can keep your neighbors happy. And, I hate to disagree with Plebus, but even sending a gift they don't buy still gains you favor. The only exception seems to be wheat, unless they buy it. With the exception of wheat, you'll get a thumbs up even if they don't want it, as long as they don't sell it. (Behold the power of cheese could have been the subtitle for Athens Through The Ages!)

2. Be careful when and where you place your stadium. As near as I can figure, when you place the stadium every gym in the city will release a competitor walker who will head to the stadium. They have a range of 75 tiles. If they don't reach the stadium, they disappear and the gym that sent them doesn't release another competitor.

3. Gods won't bless buildings across avenue or boulevard tiles

4. Trading posts and piers won't get goods from a store house set on get goods.

Maybe I was not a generous neighbor,but I really haven't found any change in their attitude after sending a gift of not needed goods(after receiving the thanks),maybe they will have some effects in the long term...By the way,only a lavish gift of needed goods and hosting and winning an olympic game have a instant effect,according to Z & U.

Concerning gifts and contests.

The way I have been playing is to start handing out gifts the first of the year after every one has handed over their tributes and after I have made my requests. This is the best time because you have up to date knowledge on each cities attitude. I have observed if I wait more than a year the attitude of needy cities changes too much towards the negative side.

I can't tell if giving a gift that a city does not need helps the attitude. Even though it does show a thumbs up by the event listing I would say it just draws out that which will eventually happen. I know it makes me feel good and it helps me make room in my SYs if I have too much of that item. I try and make it a point to give a city what it needs even if I have to trade with several other cities to get that item.

I have observed that once you launch an invasion on a rival all those cites that were not getting along with you seem to realize your vunerability and drop a level or two in attitude. So I try and launch invasions, if possible, right after the gifts are passed out.

I have also noticed that your surrounding cites are difinitely more impressed with you as you roll up the wins in the intracity games. So it is important in my game play to make sure I am competitive in all games. This means seeing what games are comming up and making sure I have enough of the cultural requirements for "Perfect" coverage.

Plebus: Granted it doesn't have an instant effect, but it does over time if consistently used. If you look on the world map in the favor advice window for a city, you'll see a thumbs up for even unwanted goods, except wheat. I'm sure its probably weighted and doesn't give as much a boost as a gift of bought goods, but its very useful when you don't have any of the goods a city buys or they don't buy any at all. I over produced cheese in Athens and gave it as small gifts each year. It kept allies and rivals happy until I could afford to send nicer, wanted gifts and build up an army. And it made conquering Knossos a piece of cake (or should that be cheese?)

I play a much more economic game, trying to keep everyone happy so there aren't any invasions. If they come, I have to do a Gustavia -- pay a bribe. I get enough military action battling monsters and angry gods.

I bribe too. Of course, when I get the two month warning, I've already sent a military force against their city, their army gets to my place, I bribe, and then they're my vassal

Hello there..

I'm new in this forum .. i'm been playing zeus for 2 or 3 weeks, now i'm in episode 3 of trojan war

I only want to add something that might help u to trick poseidon .. on hercules labor .. poseidon attacks often n curse the urchin quay n destroy the piers .. now here's the trick to save your pier .. when poseidon attacking a pier, delete it n wait till poseidon far enough from the pier then click the undo button .. your pier is save
For the urchin quay curse, a moment before poseidon cursing your urchin quay or on the way to cursing the urchin quay, delete all the urchin quay u have, why all? coz the curse is spreading like malaria, after poseidon leaves, rebuild your urchin quay, why should I do this? coz the curse last quite long, if u depend on urchin quay for food, your people will starve n leave

The curse trick can be done for other gods too, such as hephaestus with armory n sculpture studio, etc

ahhemm.. I have discovered how to use the auto-defend, so bribing isnt my only option these days

The same trick can also be applied to monster attack,I believe SenetEr found it first(guilty!)-BTW,in Miletos,my life relied on this "cheat".

Among the requirements for the Sanctuary of Theseus are excellent desireability, road access, close to the Palace, and that the Sanctuary be surrounded by walls.

You do not need road access or a Gatehouse. Instead:

1) Build your Sanctuary adjacent to the palace completely surrounded by a single width wall.
2) Include inside the wall enclosue a single road tile touching the Sanctuary.
3) For desireability you may need to add one or two commemorative memorials to the outside of the wall.
4) When Theseus arrives destroy one of the wall sections giving him access to the Sanctuary.

While using "building while pause",be careful not to save the game before unpause,boulevards and avenue will not be saved if you didn't get it some time to acknowledge the desiability change,and you'll lost these beautifications when you load the game the other time.

From the experience of Zeus and Europa,I think the best military strategy is attacking as early as possible:the game generate your rival the power by age,the longer you wait,the stronger will be,you can check the world map to see how many sheilds besides the city's name.Don't be shy when sending your 16 or 24 hoplites to conquer an enemy when they have only 1 or 2 shields,if you can have an allied army,you still have a good chance to win(though not always).

Also when asking military aid from alley or vassels,check their number of shields first,if their shields' number is significantly fewer than your opponent,better not sending them with your own army:they'll likely to be defeated(if your army was not so strong as well),and they'll get displeased with you caus you've sending them to death without the glory of victory.

Man, 9 years late to the party and I think I'm the only one in the room now

I figure I might as well share anyway, this is a little tip in case you are in a bind and need an agora vendor to get back more quickly from the granary or storehouse.

When the vendor leaves the agora to go buy goods, if you disconnect the granary or storehouse from the agora before they get there, once they reach the granary/storehouse they will instantly teleport back to the agora with the goods.

This won't work if they've already reached the granary/storehouse, though, it must be done any time after they leave the agora but before they start back.

I've missed this thread. Great finding

About herding :

For an example with fleece,

_ disable fleece production.
_ pause, build a lots of Carding Shed, un-pause a little time then pause again.
_ place sheep in a 2 tiles square with one entry.
_ then delete all Carding Shed and place one near the sheep. and enable again fleece production.

... with only one Carding Shed, you can produce over 80 loads of fleece per year(instead of 8) if some storehouses are very near to the Carding Shed.

Counter part :

_ if some sanctuaries are in the city, you have do redo that periodically.
_ if the cartpusher attempt to deliver the fleece too far -> the fleece production is almost stopped, so keep enough storage near to supply your city.

That's works also with goats. Useful only when you are very short on workers or on small maps. Several houses can distribute the fleece better.

Here is a tip if you are in a hurry to have a hero you summoned get to a monster more quickly. Place the hero hall close to the hero's entry point, and right before the hero reaches the hall block off the monster so there is no walkable path to get to it. If it is on an elevated part of the map you can usually just block off the entrances that go up. Surrounding the monster with walls will also do the trick. As soon as the hero gets to the hall it will instantly teleport to the monster, instead of walking/rafting the entire way.

A tip that I discovered (or more likely read here) back when the game first came out (and remembered now that I'm playing again):

In a pinch, you don't need a hero to kill a monster. You can stone the thing to death with rabble. Lots of rabble. Talos took about two years and a few thousand casualties, but down he went. Killed three Maenads that way too...though the one that slugged it out in the ruins of my grand agora was a true PITA as my elite housing withered away.

My mind is like a steel sieve.
