I'm amazed that a forum that has been around for a really long time has never made any attempt to secure itself from spambots. :/

That is because it will just be annoying for the real forumers.
I'm currently visiting a forum where one have to type a Captcha for being able to post. The same place I report and mark for others to see, 4-10 spam threads each day. A bit tedious as I sometimes have to type in a Captcha up to 3 times before it's correct.

That is because it will just be annoying for the real forumers.
If you use captcha / reCaptcha, then yes. But if you use Q+A and hidden input fields, then it won't be annoying. I've been on the internet for a while and HeavenGames is the only site which has a persistent spambot issue (other sites at least employ some sort of security on the registration form to stop 95% of them)
