Pretty slow going today. Guess everyone got posted out by the "Corrupt Me" thread. With Marcus and Darth both not posting, things really drop off.

I guess, Claudia, that some of these RRs are pretty narrowly tailored for certain cultural references. Muppets and MASH are U.S. phenomena. I suppose if we had an Asterix RR, the U.S. contingent might feel the same way. About the most universal phenomena I know is Disney. Otherwise, some portions of the world are going to feel left out.

Yes, NM, I have just seen the movie once, a long time ago. Sameway, "smurfs" does not seem to evocate the same thing for you than "schtroumphs" for me. But not so easy to find multicultural themes.
Just had an idea for a neww RR: Mythological monsters, what ever be the mythology. WHy do not send a chinese dragon fight (or not) against Medusa? The less known the monster, the funniest it will be, if it comes with a full description of its mischief powers!
It was just to follow the rule which says that a themed RR must be dedicated to discuss the next theme.

Akhen,
I don't feel left out, I know that I am allowed to be "off topic" here. It simply don't put me in the mood to post a lot, but I know you would be welcoming if I do. No complaints there. (Hey, I am posting now!)

Claudia, how about "classic" movies? Very few French films are known in the U.S., but I am hoping/guessing you have seen "Wizard of Oz", "Casablanca", "Citizen Kane". Perhaps there is common ground there. I would love to see a "Rick's American Bar and Grill" set up in here, with the Blue Parrot across the way.

Yes, NM, I have seen them a long time ago. It seems that the best international classics are the one that have the worst hours at TV (+ I am not really a TV watcher). My memory is not very good on them just now, but it can be improved.
I have just created a thread on monsters, not compulsorily to use in a RR.
We should really find a name for Akhen "mutant pumpkin".

Don't feel alone, Claudia. I've never seen MASH, Star Wars, the Smurfs or the Muppets (except once at Disney World). I think these were all the themes we've had. It's impossible I think to find something that unites people from all over the world except possibly, as someone suggested, Disney ... and is that cultural?

Gill, so I ham better informed (?) than you! I have StarWars tapes at home, I have a lot of smurf books (seing them on screen? whan an horror!), I have seen the muppets just enough to know what they look like (but not their names), and M*A*SH once.
But I am not sad, the biggest interest of this forum is to see how friendship can overcome the cultural differences.

To me, Akhen's monster needs a simple name like: "Bob", or maybe "Bob the Monster". "Darth Bob"?

Bob sounds good - reminds me of Blackadder - did you get Blackadder in the US, NM?

Can you see a "Dr. Zhivago" RR!? Pretty hysterical. Somehow Russian novels don't really lend themselves to "Recreation Room" themes. It would be like a "Waiting for Godot" Reck Room. Or a Edvard Munch RR, with a bunch of psychotic, death-preoccupied people screaming. Wheeee!

You can buy "Blackadder" videos, and sometimes they play on the Comedy channels or public television. Never really got as well known as "Monty Python". In another obscure piece of trivia, Monty Python's Flying Circus was almost called "Parrot Stretching Time", which is also quite a title.

That's a thought ... I wonder how well known Monty Python is globally? I know they were broadcasting it on German TV a couple of years ago when we had satellite - with sub-titles, which sort of lost the effect somehow. I suppose it's a bit old now. My daughters wouldn't have a clue what it was (though they do love Fawlty Towers, the John Cleese comedy).
