Reinstalled from a new CD from game store discount bin, patched to last one.
1. Unable to beat Earthen Great wall mission on hardest. Two scripted invasions come within 2 years of start. If I ally with Ji & Loyi, invasions come from some other city.
2. Extreme espionage. I have every loop covered with watchtowers & also 2 bridges. I'm getting 10-12 messages per year of spy-caught ALONG WITH manually catching another 5-6 per year. 18-20 spies per year isnt realistic.
3. I had conquered every city on world-map on previous mission but every city starts as rival & stays rival. I recall from old playthroughs that cities u conquer will turn ally in next mission (provided its same campaign), which still gives a bit of breather.
This wasnt GOG installation, its was a CD install like old one, patched manually.

1. My son listed the scripts for the first 2 or 3 Campaigns in TuShaWuJin's Minimaps HTML documents. I recall there was low favor that could trigger 'Opportunistic Invasions' in the Shang Dynasty(popular topic). If you desperately need the scripts for other Campaigns; I can try to check for you. List the campaign and mission names.
2. Low favor and after an invasion a city may have ~4 spies in your city; allies might not spawn new spies but vassals may if under 'Contented' favor(perhaps higher level). Regardless, If you're spying on them they can too, so cancel your spies or expect new ones to arrive. It takes ~2years for their old spies to be caught or expire after buttering them up or allying. Manually catching spies is a myth. They simply hide in another service provider and respawn in a month or 2.
3. Conquered cities remain Vassal to their conquer or scripted to the designer intension; no auto-Ally. Though I recall if the next mission city is ally to the last they might show as ally, doubtful but possible though reloading 'replay' may have something to do with it or was it canceling the effect. Weirdness can happen in transitions when a designer doesn't account for everything.
Using multiple Emperor Names, ie create a couple Emperor profiles for different purposes Looking over old saves with a different Emperor Name is advised since the 'data files'(*.dat) are in the EmperorName Folder. We don't want to change/corrupt the Empire Map data with an old saves info.

1. These were not triggered invasions, they were scripted, as they had finite set gold bribe, so set defined troop types/numbers.
2. I never send spies, EVER, just for this reason. ALL these spies were there in this map, 18-20 per year starting from 6th month onwards, irrelevant of my play style, econ/military/whatever.
3. This continuation relation status is a constant bug this play-through. Conquered cities arent staying vassals in next missions of same campaign.

andyblast ! Welcome back!
What is the exact name of the Campaign and mission you are playing?
Your post reminds me of discussion we had here years ago about a version of this game available from "Sold Out" (or some company name like that). I seem to recall we shared ancedotal evidence that this version of the game contained the problems like you are reporting. However, I cannot seem to find that thread.

3 Zhou 6 Handan (Iron and Earth V Hard).
I have 2 old saves on download cities for this map.
I was finally able to cheese the mission using multiple requests (send more requests for any or all high value items before emissaries have left own map). The NPC city registers request for goods only when emissary is beyond own map boundary.
The multiple scripted invasions are obviously a script flaw, but over-come-able using above.
The map relations from conquered cities are certainly persistent. i just started the "King Cuo's Temple" after finishing "Iron and Earth". I have never played or opened any save for this one on this PC. I conquered every city in "Iron and Earth" but now they r again 2 agreeable rivals & rest all un-explored rivals.

You previously played Handan at 'Normal'(before the patch update was released) so unlikely to have experienced problems relevant to low favor. The bolded text are relevant when playing at VH.

3 Zhou 6 Handan scripting(from TuShaWuJin's Minimaps HTML documents[zhou.htm]) 353BCE February onetime - Set Favor of Nomad Camps to 35 points -- towards All Cities 353BCE February onetime - Set Favor of Anyi to 25 points -- towards Handan 353BCE February onetime - Set Favor of Qufu to 40points -- towards All Cities 352BCE/350BCE March recurring 4months - General Request for 4~6 Iron -- from Loyi(direct result) 352BCE January onetime - Ji Active 350BCE March onetime 2months - General Request for 12 Iron -- from Ji(direct result) 349BCE/346BCE April onetime 1month - General Request for 6~8 Iron -- from Ying(direct result) 349BCE/347BCE June onetime 2months - Invasion from Ji -- of 10~14units(tiger/random/nohero) 348BCE/343BCE February recurring - Subtract 5~9 favor points from Ji -- towards Handan 346BCE/343BCE June recurring - Ji army away Mission Complete - Lingshou Appears
Last script is the players city appearing so no vassel/ally status is going to carry from previous mission IMO no resets for favor so that probably does except for Ji and Qufu which get reset the beginning of next mission. Ji invasion was scripted, any others were due to low favor and/or opportunistic.
3 Zhou 7 Lingshou from same document 317BCE February onetime - Set favor of Ji to 40points -- toward Lingshou 317BCE February onetime - Set favor of Qufu to 35points -- towards All Cities 317BCE February onetime - Qufu stops trading 315BCE April onetime - Handan buys more Bean curd 315BCE/314BCE May onetime - Loyi buys more Lacquerware 315BCE November onetime 4months - Festival Request for 4~5 Lacquerware -- from Loyi(direct result) 314BCE June onetime - Handan buys less Bean curd 314BCE November onetime 2months - Festival Request for 9~12 Millet -- from Handan(direct result) 314BCE/312BCE November onetime - price increase of 8cash for Lacquerware 313BCE/311BCE January recurring 4months - General Request for 5~9 Lacquerware -- from Anyang(direct result) 310BCE/309BCE November onetime 2months - Famine Request for 10~12 Bean curd/Wheat/Millet -- from Qufu(direct result)
