Hello.

I recently got myself Pharao + Cleopatra via steam.
Reliving the days where I hadnt to worry about a thing, you know?

Anyhow the animations of the buildings are missing.
No goldminers in the mines.
No guards in front of the palace.
Despite the fact that the building were fully staffed.

I looked already into it and I found that I had to untick the
"Disable visual themes" box.
But since Windows 10 the devs removed that option.

Is there a way disable it on any other way?

Cheers.

You could try set the Core Affinity for the game so it only use one CPU core.

See below link how to do that:
http://www.windowscentral.com/assign-specific-processor-cores-apps-windows-10

Note: Unless Microsoft has changed something in Windows 10, You will have to set the Core Affinity each time you want to play.

Back in the day when Intel introduced Hyper Treading some programs didn't like that so Toms Hardware released a tool so people didn't have to set the Core Affinity each time they wanted to use one of the affected games.

I have no idea if this programs works on Windows 10 but it is called: THG Task Asignment Manager. The file itself is called Taskassign.exe.

Didnt helped either.

I think I have to untick the "Disable visual themes" box.
But since it was removed in Windows 10 I need to execute it with codelines.
Is this somehow possible?

The problem with not having the checkbox is that Win 10 does not have Visual Themes like Win 7 (Aero) had. The same problem exist with Win 8.1.

The closest you can get is trying to get the Windows Classic theme back which some guy made back in 2015 as far as I can tell. Problem is there is no guarantee it will work on your version of Win 10 and especially not after the latest major update that is to arrive. On the other hand there is a chance the coming major update might fix the problem.

For trying it out search on google for "windows 10 classic theme" both with or witout the quotes.

The building animations glitch hasn't happened to me in a long time. Just restarting the computer should be enough to restore. If they're not coming back after that, try reinstalling the game and making sure it's running as admin.

The Steam version has a number of weird bugs in it, compared to the GOG.com version. Also, it's been available DRM free for years on GOG.com and there's no reason to be vendor-locked by Steam for such an old video game that hasn't been improved in any way. I recommend buying the GOG.com version, which is far less buggy.

I have had building animations disappear a few times over the years, but restarting the computer has always fixed it before now. It happened to me yesterday (or perhaps the day before), on both Pharaoh/Cleopatra and Caesar 3 (both from GOG.com), using Windows 10 Home on my laptop. I haven't installed anything for months, except for occasional Microsoft or Firefox updates.

I run Pharaoh/Cleopatra with compatibility mode for Windows XP (Service Pack 3), and I've tried several others. I've tried running as Administrator. I've tried the suggestions linked from reply #1 and #3. Nothing works. Since the animations fail for both games, I doubt that both game installations are bad.

Has anyone else seen this happen recently? Anything else I should try? If I don't find a fix, I dig out an old clunky laptop that has Windows 7 (and the CD versions of the games).

This won't help much, but for the record I use GOG version on Laptop with Windows 10, ie same as you.

My settings for Pharaoh/ Cleo. CIII, Zeus/Pos and ERotMK are all the same:
None are in any compatibility mode and all are run as Admin. In the case of ERotMK the run as admin box is ticked but greyed out.

Fraid it has been a long time since I played Pharaoh or CIII, much more recent (last few weeks) on Zeus and ERotMK but I don't recall any animation problems. At least I can't find a post from me on this subject.

Just thought, have you tried downloading again and reinstalling in case they made a change. Once paid for you can do this, I think.

Also there may be some advice on their website

Hi Serrataur,

The posts on the GOG.com Pharaoh forum didn't seem worthwhile, but perhaps I missed something.

I will eventually try redownloading and reinstalling, but now now. At the moment I want to spend what little game time I have on building Heh, either without building animations or on the old laptop which still works. (I could buy several old computers just for these games--one will probably last until I'm too senile to play.)
