I cannot get my economy going. I keep going into debt if I try to get my economy going but every time I don't I get attacked and killed without a military.

Almost always, the first priority is making money. Sell beer and linen (from imported flax) and maybe papyrus (from imported reeds), but reeds are bought from Meidum which also sells plain stone (which is needed for the pyramid). Once you have a good income, build some forts and feed people.

That last one from Brugle, feed people, is probably the most important. I find that one of the biggest mistakes new players make is over-prioritizing growing your houses. Often it's better to not even think about growing food until you've got your export industries up and running. If your housing block can't provide enough employees, set up a second one rather than trying to feed your first one.
Make your workers live in squalor like the foul peasants they are, and only once your exports and your military is in place consider listening to their whining about "needs" and "being tired of eating dirt."
This is especially important in military-heavy missions. As you've discovered, an army is hella expensive, even moreso the higher you go in difficulty. Gotta get those exports up and booming before anything else, or you'll fend off your enemies only to have Pharaoh knocking on your door.

Don't let there be too many people (say much over 1000) without food, since city health will get bad and plague may occur. You can get a good income and train soldiers (and grow some food for later expansion) with considerably less than 1000 people.

Thanks for the help! I restarted and beat it first try. I think my issue was getting the military too soon.
