There's already a few excellent Baki threads but I thought I'd put up some planning notes - in case anyone finds them interesting, but mainly so that other people can spot my mistakes for me before I get 10 years into the city
It's still in the very early stages, just working through goals, goods consumption, basic layout, and some testing. Might take a while depending mainly on whether it warms up enough to go outside or finally snows enough to go skiing.
Goals:
With all the space in Baki it seems right to go for a high-pop goal, and with limited goods a high-quality housing goal would be a challenge. So I want to build a big city with all Palatial Estates and Fancy Residences.
I want to build all housing on the mainland, mostly off the water table, with the monuments inside the city. This is a completely arbitrary goal. On the downside it will restrict me to a single ore-bearing rock section, but on the upside will hopefully let me use just 2 housing blocks (with water and possibly other services on a long walk).
Another bonus of just 2 blocks is that it will be easy to provide 100% coverage of all services to all houses, so that's another goal.
I'd also like the city to be "eternal" or at least stable for a few decades, but not necessarily in its peak state - I'm willing to let some of the Estates devolve to Fancy Residences to provide workers, so will have to plan bazaar coverage to allow sections of the Estates to devolve.
I'm playing on Hard difficulty.
Food:
I'll most likely use Osiris' Temple Complex for the reduced food consumption as it will allow more Estates.
The Estates would eat one imported food plus figs and game meat, so with 2500 meat and 2500 chickpeas importable that's 6000 people in 30 Estates, eating 2400 of each. (Or 31 Estates if I can have a single estate served by both the meat-distributing bazaar and the chickpea-distributing bazaar).
The Residences would then eat figs and game meat, and there should be enough of each to feed more people than I can supply other goods to.
Beer/Linen/Papyrus:
Beer is imported as 4000 barley & 1500 beer from Rowarty. 6500 Linen and 2500 flax can be imported from 4 cities. 15000 Papyrus can be imported by sea. Which seemed like plenty until I realised that the total amount imported would be limited by how many ships can come in each year and what goods they sold. Rowarty is the only source of beer but also sells linen and papyrus, so I can't guarantee 5500 beer without micromanaging trade (which I don't want to do).
So it looks like the number of Fancy Residences possible will come mostly down to what mix of goods the Rowarty ships sell.
Making some assumptions to get started - if ships come 5 times/year and sell 1200 items each time, that's 6000 total for each trading city. Assuming that ships will sell an equal mix of goods if all are being imported, and playing around with the Pharaoh Cities spreadsheet, I came up with a ballpark solution:
109 Fancy Residences (10028 pop) plus 30 Estates (6000 pop)
Beer 3336 plus 2 long-walk Senet Houses <720 = 4056
Linen 3336 plus 2 long-walk Mortuaries <720 = 4056
Papyrus 3420-4560 (say 4000) (from 5 Libraries and 9 Schools)
That would mean Linen imports of 1600 and Papyrus imports of 4000, and if they were spread evenly among the Men-nefer, Itjtawy and Rowarty ships that would leave 4100 of other goods from each city - just enough barley and beer from Rowarty, and plenty of leeway for meat and chickpeas from the others.
I don't know if it will work but I'm interested to see what happens. I'll probably leave some space for more Residences to see how far I can push it, and if it doesn't work I'll just have to delete some. Stockpiling all the goods should help with yearly variations.
So final food consumption would be:
Residences - 12034 figs & game meat each
Estates - 4800 figs, 4800 game meat, 2400 chickpeas, 2400 meat
Would love to hear if I've gone wrong somewhere or any other thoughts :)
