So basically this game seems determined to make me slide into debt and ruin. I'm in Memphis in the archaic period, and I've more or less got the city running smoothly except that I cannot turn a profit. Tax revenue is never more than 100 (whatever the unit of currency is) even though the advisor says I'm supposed to making 6-700 a year, and no more than 20 whatevers go uncollected. I had to skip the previous mission because there is no way ever I was going to keep the city afloat with taxes alone. With the last of my treasury I opened trade with the other city and export of papyrus started. And by that I mean a few guys came and took some papyrus from the warehouse and left, and didn't give me anything. According to the advisor I haven't made anything other than tax income since I began trading. Now the merchants come through and don't take anything, and I'm over 1000 clams in debt. Is there some little detail in those giant blocks of help text that I missed, or is the game broken?

I could have sworn it said Perwadjyt bought papyrus in the instruction text, and I saw two of the southern cities, but they weren't trading. Anyway, I've pulled myself out of debt with papyrus trade, and will be a happy nomarch when I don't have to jump through hoops just to make the city functional. Thanks for the help.
I've noticed that Perwadjyt doesn't seem to want to sell me any figs though, even thought it says they do...

While I don't recommend doing it, there shouldn't be any problem buying figs from Perwadjyt (if their caravans aren't too busy selling bricks). Did you set a storage yard to accept figs? (The default setting for a storage yard is to accept non-food goods but not accept food.)

When i rebuilt my men-nefer, i got a population up a going fed from the floodplains. papyrus was started as soon as possible to get an income. once i had this i imported my bricks (micromanaging to stay out of debt). by the end of the mission i was earning well in the plus.
you should be able to fit all required workers into one compact block with all necessary industry branching off from it. If i remember correctly i had two reed collectors next to the north swamp and two as far towards the sotherly one as seemed resonable, considering reed gatherers will walk as far as required to get reed.
there is no reason to import figs on this mission. you can get all your food needed for CR from the floodplain (as well as barley).
please post with any more issues you have Bubbahotep.
