In the second training level, I nearly reached 300 population and had modest building costs. But I needed 5 gold mines to pay for everything. Is there something wrong for me or are the wages in the ancient cities really that high ? All the gold mines were fully staffed and not too far awy from the palace.

For one cart of gold you get 100 deben! One goldmine should be able to support your population at that stage! And you have loads of money in the beginning scenario, the money you get in the beginning should be more than enough to finish the scenario...
Sounds fishy to me that the money isn't enough

Maybe you have it (the difficulty, under the options menu)on Hard or Very Hard...

Moquel, I know that I probably don't need any extra gold in the tutorial assignements, but I just wanted to know how much a gold mine would give me. My setting were set to "hard", so this is maybe the cause. Anyway, it's not a very good output relative to the prices of building something or paying all your workers.
