Many hints files says that you should disconnect docks from each other.
1)How do you do it?
2)It is smart to do it?

My only experiment with two disconnected docks, trading different goods, was On. It wasn't a disaster, but I noticed the same inefficiencies that Vriesea reports. I guess I can imagine map layouts where multiple, disconnected docks would be unavoidable, but in general I don't think they're such a great idea.

I've seen several different problems in Pharaoh and Caesar III when a building that either generates or receives a destination walker is touched by two unconnected roads. So I simply avoid the situation.

I am in North Dahshur and I'm losing big time. And part of the reason is from what everyone's been discussing here.
To begin with, I don't make any real housing blocks. I don't use roadblocks because I don't understand them LOL... And when I've tried it seems that jobs suffer (which are located on the other side of the r.block).
But because I don't use them, my bazaar ladies tend to wander and certain neighborhoods go without food and become plague-ridden (or diseased or...)
So, I tried having a storage yard (in a different level) in between two "neighborhoods". One neightborhood had all of the floodplain farms, and the other had the pottery. The top-most section (with the farms) had reeds and paper makers... They were all very close to one another... and yet a lot of people went without one or another of the goods. So my storage yard had one road leading to one area and another road to the other. And it was completely ignored. It seems, to me, that you can't place a road to the front of the yard. It has to go down a side... because when I placed a side road from the area with pottery, it stated accepting the pottery. And likewise for the farm goods.
It's all very confusing and frustrating LOL. My docks tend to be side by side with a road right in front of them and a firehouse at the end. I started building multiple docks when I saw a long line of ships waiting for an empty dock...
