This may not always be the case, but I found in one city where I was having to import the plain stone by a sea route the ship would bring no more than 4 units per load, even though that is the only thing I was buying from them. I still haven't figured that one out, because if it comes by a land route the caravan will drop 8 blocks per trader.

Having an efficient dock is critical for a large volume of river trade. Putting the dock close to the entry point helps, but more important is making sure that the dockers don't ever walk very far. Avoid having storage yards that are far from the dock, connected to it, and either contain river exports or have room for river imports. I often build a "disconnected dock" (connected to a few nearby storage yards and not too much else) and use storage yard "get" orders to move goods around (since storage yard cart pushers that are "getting" goods don't need a road).
