Japan Mod

-------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------

I've updated right now the Chronicles of Wei v2.1. I'm very satisfied with the result: a city building campaign based on Japan, with correct english texts and mistakes fixed, therefore with a decent level. (Thanks to Gweilo and User3 respectively)

The interesting of this campaign is not the quality of the story or the well planned plot -there are jewells in the campaigns download section- but It is the nearest thing to a "Nippon Mod"* right now.

*(User3's name for the mod, and I like it)

Nippon mod current features

-Japanese archipelago map (with a far Korea)
-.eng file modified so that Chinese leader names and towns are fully Japanese. I've separated in easy sections each list so that the campaign creator could easily find what she/he is looking for.
-Japan Mod map for widescreen patched games (by User3)

Nippon mod future features

-.eng and MM.eng are being modified to change Ancestral and Daoist Gods for Shintoist and Taoist Gods, also to change Chinese historic references to Japanese ones, and little changes in a few buildings names.

Chronicle of Wei help

The campaign in which the mod is included is moreless easy, not a challenge for advanced players, focused in city-building and politics. It can be found here

Map for widescreen patched games

User3 has recently upload a Japan map to allow people playing with WS patch, play the mod.
It can be found here.

User3, the boss, has upload some missions plays for if it could give a hint:

Kobe
Osaka
Kyoto
Osaka 2

Credits

-User3 for quality test and the nippon mod he makes grow!
-Gweilo for english correction.
-My wife for test.

*Everyone cand use the map .jpg and the .eng files to create their own Japanese campaigns, I just ask to be credited next to User3 and to upload the campaign in the emperor heaven.

Old post

Dear emperor community:

I've recently ended my campaign located in the origins of Japanese culture, and as these forums have been my only support to solve my creation doubts, I think that the result should be shared with you.
But, before do it I need to solve some questions and also if is possible to send the files to a moderator prior to upload them, just to receive a check and aproval, and if it's possible to supervise and repair my english text (as I'm not a native english speaker). So, in first place my doubts:

-The campaign works over a modified map file and with a barely modified .eng file. Both files are a MUST HAVE to properly play the campaign. The map, because the campaign happens in the Japanese archipelago, therefore, using the default map would empty of sense the trade routes and even the city maps. And the .eng files because some city names and leader names have been modified to provide the Japanese ambience.
As I've read in one of the post in which a user asked to provide a modified .eng text and it was approved always if the instructions were very clear in keeping the original files as backup, use the modified .eng, and restoring to default when the campaign was ended; my doubt is:

1.Is it possible to upload this campaign that NEEDS the two files all together with clear instructions?

-Also, as I'm some kind of History lover, the campaign is not set as it is random, I've been working all the time over the actual Japan origins knowledge to provide a near-to-reality perspective (with just a little of fantasy). So, I've also created a useful pdf annex that contains the historical keys to understand the campaign, the characters and the missions. This file is optional, but adds a great depth to the campaign, overall for the historical lover player. As it's optional, my doubt is:

2.Is it possible to upload in miscellaneous section the pdf file and to provide in the campaign download a link to allow players to obtain it if they want?

-I'm working right now in the background music and mission intro voices. The intro voices are in spanish as my main tester is my wife, so this sound won't be public. But for the background music I'm using the Mononoke princess original soundtrack. Of course, these pieces are shorter than the original tracks, but I know that the ost has copyright -even when the whole soundtrack is easy listenable in youtube- so my doubt is:

3.Is it possible -always respecting the law and copyright- to upload this modified tracks to allow the players that want to do it, complete the japanese experience with these beautiful masterpieces?

-And my main worry is about the language, I'm not native english speaker as you probably have already seen. And I'm not uploading a file with grammar mistakes. So my doubt is:

4.Is anyone from HG team interested in checking my campaign and provide the perfect english text? Please.

And there is also one last thing:
I'm suffering because I cannot use my pixelart skills to provided to this game the Japanese mod that it deserves, because there isn't absolutely anything out there that allows someone like me to modify .sg3 and .555 files and to compress them again to make them work in emperor rotmk. I know that this is a delicate subject, because for some reason the C3modder programm has been removed from the earth surface. But as I express in the pdf annex file and I will die repeating: If someone knows the way to modify these files and make them work on the emperor game -always respecting the law and the copyright- I promise to put all my effort to create the japanese culture graphics.

Thank you all and I apologize for my english.

-Edited because english grammar mistakes.

Yes, Rj66 provided a modified Empire Map several years ago. The ENG file was discussed and approved of several months ago.
(I defer to staff input if policy has changed)
2.Is it possible to upload in miscellaneus section the pdf file and to provide in the campaign download a link to allow players to obtain it if they want?
Just put the PDF in the ZIPed file with the PAK, JPG & ENG files. Make a point to highlight the PDFs existence on the Download page.

Thank you User3, that is what I wish to hear, so If no other instructions are given by the HG staff, I will prepare the clear instructions for installation and put the pdf with the .eng, the map and the .pak files.
But I'm worried to upload a campaign with english mistakes. Do you think that it could be a good idea to post the mission text so maybe you could help me tunning the speech? But, this option will be a great spoiler.

Hello Armel, welcome to Emperor Heaven and thanks for sharing your ambitious project with us.

Here are my answers to your questions.

1.Is it possible to upload this campaign that NEEDS the two files all together with clear instructions? Yes, put every file you want to upload in a zip folder and upload it.

2.Is it possible to upload in miscellaneous section the pdf file and to provide in the campaign download a link to allow players to obtain it if they want? Yes, see my answer above.

3.Is it possible -always respecting the law and copyright- to upload this modified tracks to allow the players that want to do it, complete the japanese experience with these beautiful masterpieces? Yes, a modified short snip of the music should be ok.

4.Is anyone from HG team interested in checking my campaign and provide the perfect english text? Please. Yes, I can assist with this. Here is what I will need you to do. Put all the English text you've written so far into ONE text file (.txt) (this should include the Campaign Introduction text, Campaign Victory text, and all mission introduction and victory texts). Then email that text file to me. I will proofread it and make the necessary grammer corrections and then email it back to you.

Thank you for your answer Gweilo, and for the welcome.

I'm sorry for not been able to answer before, the season still busy here and I'm working hard in the office this week.

I sent you the .txt file yesterday evening (Spain evening) for if you can give it a check.

Thank you for your interest. To be honest I'm a little bit excited, because I've been creating maps and adventures in Sierra games since I was a child playing Caesar III, but it will be the first time I share a work with the public.
Hello Armel, welcome to Emperor Heaven and thanks for sharing your ambitious project with us.
You are all welcome, I think is the minimum when you have been learning and solving your doubts through the only serious emperor source on the internet. But I fear that the campaign is more humble than ambitious, he he he. Please, don't put many hopes on it to don't become disappointed.

PS=I want to add that in my search of how to modify the graphics, Maybe I was ambitious, xD

*Edited for english mistake.

Just an update to anyone following this, I received his text file, revised it, and emailed it back to him. He confirmed he received it.

It was a fun exercise for me; I learned alot about the early Japanese myths.

Yes I did!!!!

And I have finally submit the campaign. It is a little bit heavy (2.86 mb) and the sad is that 2mb of weight belongs to the PDF annex.

If you give it a try, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did it creating it.

Please, if someone plays it, share some of your gameplay experience and/or pictures, I will be very happy.

And Thank you Gweilo for your awesome english correction, I love it even more than the original in Spanish.

I just approved it. Don't worry about the size, 3MB is not big.

I do want to play it someday but I can't modify my game files right now because I am completing my own new project

All I ask is that you check the download page every so often, because if players have any difficulty installing your campaign they will probably leave comments there asking for your assistance.

Of course, I will. (In fact I've been checking the downloads section the whole morning to see if the campaign would appear. XD And It appears!!)

I would apreciate in the future you could test it. But meanwhile you must still focused on the Kitchen's God adventure, it looks pretty funny, and I want to play when your release it.

Thank you

----Edited (added since here) to avoid new post----

I've seen your comment in the campaign file, User3. And I'm thinking that could be nice to upload modified images to fit in the widescreen modded games.
But I've never used it either, so I have a few doubts that maybe you can resolve:

A)If I re-scale the images to fit the different screen sizes, Would the cities location still on the right place over the Japan map or they will appear in the top left corner?

B)If the answer to question A is: "Yes, the cities will be in the right location because of the widescreen mod auto-adjusts the .pak data"; what are the file sizes that I need to create?

I don't know for sure; I tried the patch out years ago. I prefer 'windowed mode' and couldn't find a good compromise size with my preferred desktop dimension. Maybe when I get a 50 inch HDTV with VGA/DVI inputs, I will give it another try.

Simply remind the widescreen patch users that they need to resize the image to the dimension their patch provides.

and/or

Adjust the image border if that is what the current patch does.

http://www.wsgf.org/dr/emperor-rise-middle-kingdom/en

Scroll past the polish links to find Emperor.7z link(168MB download).

If you prefer, I could try the patch out again and see which specific method works and provide the adjusted JPGs for you after testing them out. Im at your disposal, boss man.

Hey Gweilo,
If I do the above mentioned JPG's thing for this Japan Mod would if be OK to use the Misc. Section downloads to publish them?
Both of us prefer to keep email private.

Finally, got the WSGF patch downloaded.

Thanks Gweilo!

Armel;
Here is a screenshot of what the WS Empire map looks like for 1920x1080(full HD) with your map. Pardon the resize blur but the full size image wasn't uploading.
http://tinypic.com/r/104kh8x/9

After they backup the WSpatch China_MapOfChina03.JPG

The method is open a new image in Paint, resize to the dimension of the patch JPG(China_MapOfChina03), Paste from: your JPG, Save as: C:\Sierra\EmperorRotMK\DATA\China_MapOfChina03.JPG (overwriting the file). Note: GOG version default install uses a different path with spaces in it, so says the WSGF forum members.

If this is satisfactory, then I will start converting for all the supplied sizes of the WSpatch.

Armel, I changed the subject of this post, as you requested.
Thank you so much Gweilo!
I prefer 'windowed mode'
Me too! I play in a laptop with 1366.
If you prefer, I could try the patch out again and see which specific method works and provide the adjusted JPGs for you after testing them out. Im at your disposal, boss man.
If we are making -or trying to- a Nippon mod, we follow japanese way, so you are the boss as you are more experienced and have an higher wisdom with this game. Without you, this campaign would probably been unplayable, and I probably would'nt be working on the .eng file to change buildings and gods names. So you command venerable User3!
If this is satisfactory, then I will start converting for all the supplied sizes of the WSpatch.
For if I can help, when I did the map I did it in big size, but then rescale it to the actual game size and don't save my work.
But, I've done one full of water with the higher size that the patch allows, for if it can be useful for your work, Take it and ask whatever you need in that I can help, I'm good with graphics just for you to know.
The picture for if it can help you:
MapofChina03 2560x1080

I will still working on the .eng file and checking the forum to be updated in your work progress. Thank you User3!

PS- I was thinking that maybe to create a misc. file that includes a fully modified .eng text (all that could be changed) and all works done for a "Nippon mod", as the resized images you are going to create, or maybe musics in the future (or who knows, maybe in a future changed graphics?? I still dreaming, the hope must never been lost), or even changed all the .jpgs with japanese pictures and diferent maps to cover the Japanese periods and regions (maybe one only for the main Island, or another including also little farest islands, I don't know.
I let it in the air.

I found two places with some information and source code on editing the animations. You may have to find a programmer type person at your university to get something useable made. Navigating the two sites may provide more information of use.

Hey there Armel- user3 said you were looking for a way to modify those sg/555 files? Well, with some help from Pecunia I've managed to create an sg-writer utility that can modify the in-game graphics archives.

There's no GUI at the moment, but if you liked I could package a simple .jar executable with some text-based instructions and an .xml configuration script. That should be enough to get you started for now.

Do you have any links to some samples of your pixel-art?

EDIT: By the way, it looks very much as if the C3Modder program is still available for download here?
