When this game was first released a little over 20 years ago, I still remember playing in my little "man cave" my parents made for me with a computer in it. I believe it was the summer between freshman year and sophomore year.
Man was it really fun to play, but at the same time utterly and stupidly hard. I could barely get past Tarraco without economic shenanigans that would quickly spiral into mass devolution, debt, and strife. "Govern for 5 more years?" yea **** that, good luck Mr. Predecessor Architect! Miletus was impossible, fires everywhere and I quit the game. Military missions I got about as far I think.
Today, I finally completed all the campaign missions. I even finished Massilia with perfect ratings 100/100/100/100. Military ones were a lot easier than the peaceful playthrough but still fun to apply all the knowledge I gained after.
Anyways, I just want to give a HUGE thank you to all the brilliant and wonderful people who have contributed to this forum. You are the reason that the internet can be a wonderful place to share ideas, expertise, and help. I don't know what compelled me to try and beat this game so many years later but I'm so glad I did and really grateful that I ended up here. The dedication and passion people have had to solve or understand challenges in this game are inspiring. Sometimes a game with archaic mechanics and few "quality of life" changes actually makes for a much deeper experience. It helps create amazing communities like this.
Hail Caesars!
