"The art of war is of vital importance to the State. It is a matter of life and death, a road either to safety or to ruin. Hence it is a subject of inquiry which can on no account be neglected." ~ Sun Tzu.

I'm pleased to announce that I have a new custom campaign in development. It's a project I've always wanted to tackle - a campaign featuring the hero Sun Tzu, to occur during his actual lifespan. Interestingly, even though his master work "The Art of War" is known world-wide today, there is not a lot of solid history on his life itself. However there is enough for me to put together a small campaign set in the late Spring and Autumn period. Here are the historical events I have to work with for this campaign.

544 BCE - Sun Tzu born
515 BCE - King Liao of Wu is assassinated, Prince Guang becomes King Helu of Wu.
512 BCE - Sun Tzu begins service to King Helu of Wu.
506 BCE - King Helu of Wu invades the kingdom of Chu. The Battle of Boju is fought and Chu is defeated. Wu captures Ying, the capital of Chu. King Zhao of Chu successfully flees.
505 BCE - Duke Ai of the kingdom of Qin allies with Chu. The combined armies of Qin and Chu defeat Wu in several battles. These defeats, coupled with a rebellion in Wu forces King Helü
to retreat back to Wu. King Zhao of Chu then returns and recaptures Ying.
496 BCE - Sun Tzu dies
496 BCE - King Helu dies

Here is a draft of the mission teasers and time limits:

Mission 1 - The Art of Deception - 10 years, from 516 BCE to the end of 507 BCE.

Mission 2 - Fall like a Thunderbolt - 5 years, from 506 BCE to the end of 502 BCE.

Mission 3 - The Art of War - no time limit, starts in 501 BCE.

I've been researching the late Spring and Autumn period and there is actually quite a bit of 'historical leeway' on when the ancient Chinese began wide-spread use of some commodities. So I won't be sticking entirely to the 'Availability Chart' you can find on this website and in the game materials. I am going to allow iron, lacquerware, and catapults. All other commodities, heroes, etc., will follow the game's model for availability.

This campaign will only have one map, so I am trying to make it special. It will be an 'enormous' size map with humid climate, and feature the Great Wall monument in mountainous terrain (which is proving to be quite the map-making chore!).

This will be a combat-heavy campaign designed for advanced players. However, it has one caveat that you may find unusual for my designs - it will allow sabotage by spies. In fact, it will be play-balanced for the usage of spies in the role of saboteurs.

I have built a teaser album in the Emperor Heaven Gallery for this project. It will grow in the days ahead. For now, it has some research information. You can see it here:

I anticipate a release date for this campaign sometime in September 2017.

Please feel free to leave any comments, suggestions, or questions you may have about this project.

I just added 15 screenshots from my playtesting into the campaign teaser album, viewable here: http://emperor.heavengames.com/gallery/album23

I guess that tells you that I've been working on this project for awhile now (since late June). Just don't get your hopes up for an early release because I'm about to go on vacation for 3 weeks (during which time I will not be at home to work on this).

Nevertheless, the project is about 90% completed. I need to write the mission 3 victory text and campaign victory text, and of course the Readme file. This is why I believe it can be released in September after I return.

I should have more design comments to share before then.

Wow, you have been amazingly prolific in campaign design. A well deserved vacation with family should be rejuvenating.

Bon voyage!

My vacation will be in Taiwan and Hong Kong, so I may get inspired for new Emperor projects while I'm over there.

As I stated above, I'm going to allow sabotage by spies in this campaign, in fact I'm balancing the play difficulty based on a player actively using spies to sabotage the military of the enemy cities. Still, a player will have to be on their toes and conduct meticulous scouting on the empire map to determine when to send spies. I am also intentionally making spy missions more difficult for a player because some of the mission goals require making allies, and the game prevents a player from sending a spy to an allied city. To offset that, I'm allowing 'breaking alliances' in this campaign. Suffice it to say the savy player will be conducting some interesting diplomacy on the empire map.

For this campaigns storyline, I injected many quotes from 'The Art of War' treatise. They come in the form of messages and conversations between you (the player) and Sun Tzu. I think it helps with the immersion and overall theme revolving around the man responsible for writing it.

But did he really? A lot of modern historians believe that 'The Art of War' was originated by Sun Tzu, but contains considerable modification and addendum from other Chinese strategists/writers, in later times. For purposes of this campaigns storyline, the document is solely written by Sun Tzu.

Hello again, I am back from holiday and plan to resume the completion of this campaign soon. Right now I'm a little distracted by Hurricane Harvey.

I have successfully appeased the weather gods and survived the floods from Hurricane Harvey, so I have time again to complete the work on this campaign. Today I finished writing all the storyline. I will begin on the Readme file soon.

Oh, I added a new photo to the teaser album. Behold, the grizzled hurricane survivor.

I added 3 screenshots to the playtest teaser album. They are minimaps of my builds for missions 1, 2, and 3.

Wow, it's honestly nice to see you still working on Emperor campaigns. I think it's about time I try out some of your stuff.

Truthfully, I was a bit intimidated at first when I saw the map in Bandit Lord's Destiny many months ago, and hesitated to try out your campaigns at the time, when I was starting out. But now after having quite a bit of experience of playing Emperor, it's probably about time I should.

EDIT: (Oh, btw.. Out of Topic: I've written an e-mail to you quite a few days ago, just to let you know. It was something about uploading files to Zeus heaven and was hoping you could help me a little bit, with that stuff. No pressure though.. You can reply anytime soon. )

Hmmm...I don't recall seeing your email and it's not in my inbox now. If you used my work account it might have been intercepted by our spam filter. You can use my person one: rebl@swbell.net

This campaign might be ok to break yourself in with (although there are easier ones I've built here), because the time limits in this one are not too intense.

Happy gaming!
