I'm playing the Anyi mission (first mission with Salt Extractors). In order to butter up one of my rivals, I sent him a Large gift of 16 cannisters of salt. My little emissary d00ds started truckin' towards the edge of the map with their gift...
...and got eaten by a Salamander just a few tiles away from the map edge.
Stupid salamanders!

Towers.
Put a couple of nice towers (manned of course), by the salamander spawning point.
They make excellent target practice.

No towers available on this map, or I would have.
I eventually settled for building a small roadway by the chokepoint (there's a small path across the river here which all incoming and outgoing traffic has to pass over on this side of the map) and built an improved Watchtower. So the guards walk up and down the road and take care of the salamanders.
And speaking of which, I did some looking around on the Internet, and I can find zero evidence that Chinese Giant Salamanders are in any way whatsoever a threat to human life. They're not poisonous, and they don't attack humans. So I'm kinda curious to know why Breakaway picked them as a "predator" species.

I don't think there is any evidence that they really march up and down the streets of Elite districts of your city devouring everything in their path either (exactly what they were doing to me yesterday during our multiplayer game).
Why did we include them as predators? Well how cool is it that there are really six-foot long species of salamanders that currently live in China? You wouldn't want us have left them out would you?

And at least the salamanders aren't as vicious as those Gobi Bears

Well, see, if the only way you can include them in the game is to make them do something (i.e. kill people) that they are absolutely, 100% not known to do in real life...
...then yeah, I'd rather you just left 'em out.

OMG :O I have the same problem too but it was with tigers. I forgot which mission it was, but they have this island that's full of iron that my weaponsmith needs. Well, on this island is FULL of tigers. I built this bridge to it with a watch tower so the guards could kill the tigers, but it didn't work. My guards get killed by the tiger like so easily ! I was so mad and there was nothing I could do because the tigers jumped on the bridge right after that and got through to my mainland before I could delete the bridge. The tigers went wil after that and I couldn't kill them because I couldn't get the weapon thing going on due to the lack of iron ! Later I found out that hunters can kill tigers if the tigers attack them first, but that's kind of rare because those tigers are smart :P

Well I thought giant salamanders were just something Sierra (or whoever) madeup for the game hehe.
What I want to know is, why they used Pandas as a predator? I have yet to see a panda attack a person in my city, and believe me, those pandas have come right into my city, and the people have walked by them going about their jobs! Nothing. However, I dont want them to be predators! same with tigers really, I dont want to have them get killed... heh
Another thing, when creating city maps, we shouldnt be allowed place predator/prey points in invalid spots like in Pharaoh.
Pandas cant be placed without the presence of bamboo, salamanders cant be placed far inland (they are water creatures right?) same with alligators. And I think there should have to be cliffs on the map to place vultures, unless these are the stupid variety that nest on the ground hehe
"Can we go to the Planet of the Baconmen and get the marrow sucked from our bones?" --from Ed Edd and Eddy
hehehe. Yep, I can recall the cry for help from Gobi Bear as the salamanders were attacking his walkers. Sad though, that only a few minutes later, one of his spies took down my mill. hahaha
One day I will get used to the fact that life just happens. Until then, I will pretend that I serve a purpose.-- DarkLord

We made sure the pandas are fed a special form of bamboo that keeps them docile. So they are predators in name only.
We had a lot of panda military action during our beta testing and it just didn't feel right...
Getting these endangered species some recognition was one of the prime reasons we included these two animals in the game, even if they don't behave properly. I don't think Gobi Bear rampages strike the towns of the Gobi desert often either.

Couldn't you have just made them animals that sit there and look cool without actually doing anything? Or at least only fight back when disturbed?

There was an article in a local paper that the nomadic Saiga Antelope may join the dodo soon.

A bit of advice:
If you have to connect your city to an island with a bunch of predators on it, use ferrys!
Doesn't slow your people down, doesn't need workers or maintenance, but when was the last time you saw a tiger who could use oars?

Pliny,
I build a farm right next to the bamboo for the Panda's in one mission - kept having very low production - found Panda's "wrestling" with my farm workers.
I think the giant salamanders in the game are actually Pharaoh crocodiles in disguise.
The Giant Salamander article is awesome. Learn something every day. Who said games are not educational?

HI EVERYONE IN THAT 1ST MISSION WITH SALT WHAT I DID TO PREVENT THOSE SO CUTE AND NICE SALAMANDERS TO HURT THOSE WORKERS WHO STRIVED SO HARD TO DELIVER SALT TO MY WAREHOUSES AND COMMERCE QUAYS SO THAT I COULD FILL THE CITY COFFERS IS PUT A RESIDENTIAL WALL ALL ALONG THE ROAD ON BOTH SIDE OF IT . SO THAT THE ANIMALS DID NOT DISAPPEAR AND REAPPEAR IN THE FACE OF MY DELIVERRY MEN AND THEY DID NOT RUIN MY MONEY MAKING MACHINE. IT WAS QUITE EXPENSIVE AND RATHER STRANGE BUT EFFICIENT.
SO EVEN IF YOU CAN'T WALL THEM IN WALL THEM OUT!!!!
