In GameSpot screenshots #7 and #8 (5/22), there seems to be an awful lot of aesthetic items in what are essentially industrial and farm areas. Is there any reason for that?
#7 seems to be over the top with statues and gardens, more than most of the neighborhoods we've seen. I know in the Breakaway screenshot Canalatkaifeng, they show in the menu a list of improved buildings (fancy well, inspector's tower, and watch towers). Could the blue tower in the left of shot #7 be an improved inspector's tower? If so, I wonder what you get from an improved tower that makes it worthwhile to beautify the heck out of the area.

The more beautiful the area, the better it is for housing. The better it is for housing, the better the housing, the more people coming, etc.

Of course the screens could have been beautified that much just to make them look pretty rather than a result of effective play style.
Feng Shui maybe? We'll have to wait for the eagerly awaited update for that!

Wu Su Zheng: My point is that there aren't any houses in #7 and only a couple of huts outside the "industrial" wall in #8. The pretty stuff is all placed around industrial buildings and farms.
Jayhawk: I think you're probably right, but the improved building thing kind of intrigued me. I was hoping one of the blue guys (are they still blue?) would pop by and say yea or nay.
Peregrin: I remember a post where they said Feng Shui was more than aesthetics, but it could be part of it. I wish they'd publish that update too. I'm actually looking forward to that designer article more than the screenshots.

Probably because they were built by someone that didn't know what they were doing.
