Hallo everybody!

I was just wondering, is a Canuck simply a Canadian, or is it also something else? I've always had some vague impression it was some sort of duck as well ?

No, you're thinking of canard (duck)

My dad's a 100% French Canadian, so I guess that makes me sort of a Canuck.

Unless you're talking about that, ummm, hockey team out in Vancouver (Messier - uggh!) a Canuck is a Canadian. My Collins Canadian Dictionary even says so.

If it looks like a duck and walks like a duck, it must be Joe Clark. Sorry, that's a joke only the canucks will get.

Yes what is the origin of the term. Can you check that Canadian Dictionary Caylynn?

I'll get back to you on the origin of Canuck. I'm almost done lunch so it's back to studying for me...

Just briefly: Joe Clark is a politician here in Canada. SenetEr can provide more details I'm sure - I have to get back to the books.

Marcus,

Joe Clark was and is again the leader of the conservative party in Canada. He was the prime minister of a minority government back in 1979. He lasted only 9 months before the minority government fell apart(tried to raise gasoline taxes). He is from Alberta and the people and media from central Canada would always call him Joe Who when ever they talked or reported on him. He was kinda a quiet and didn't have much personality, also his wife was a strong feminist(not a bad thing but this was the 70's) who didn't take his last name(once again not a bad thing, my wife kept her name). In general he is the Rodney Dangerfield of Canadian politics. So when ever you talk about him someone will always say "Joe Who"

Cheers T

(BTW: no, I didn't confused canuck with canard, I know what a canard is, I also speak french )

Yes, good ol' Joe Who. Our economy teacher won't stop making fun of him actually. We're garanteed at least a joke a class (3 classes a week => minimum of 3 jokes/week)... it's hard to believe, but it gets annoying, even with Joe!
