On weekend I played Serabit Khadim and found it very interesting, if going for high prosperity - and got an idea it could be even better if combined with population. Tomek tested this combination and we agreed that this is a perfect map for contest; we have edited the map so that you can play as long as you wish (original version ends as soon as you have Kingdom 80). That is also the reason for the requirement of 1 Palatial Estate - you can't achieve this level of housing.

If you want to take part in the contest, please read this post and rules carefully. Don't start from your career map of Serabit Khadim - download the modified *.sav file.

If you don't understand some of the used expressions or are not sure what it is about, please look into the post "Contest rules"!

Herewith the following contest is announced:
Name of scenario : Serabit Khadim (modified career map - download from my site)
Completion Criteria : Kingdom rating 80, not in debt
Winning Criterion 1 : Prosperity
Winning Criterion 2 : Population

Rules : Must be played at difficulty HARD. No cheats, but 2 recruiters are allowed (search Game Help forum for "Recruiter" if you don't know how to build 2). You must save the game each December and preserve these saves. Don't send them though, unless asked to do so. It is impossible to control all saves of all participants, but at least some of them will be checked. Please, be sure to save regularly - if you fail to supply progressive saves on demand, you will not be ranked in the contest.
Submit save to : balticus@geocities.com (only 1 save per person, please - and use Winzip or WinRAR to compress the file!)
How to submit : Name the save "Serabit yourname.sav", compressed archive "Serabit yourname.zip" (or .rar). Attach it to the message, and state your result (Prosperity and Population) in the message. Use your Forum name preferably, please - if too long, use part of it and state your full forum name in the mail.
Submit until : March 10, 23:59 of your local time.
Any questions please direct to the above mail address, or post them here.
Preliminary results will be announced on Sunday, March 12; official results as soon as the chosen progressive saves are checked. Results of all people who have submitted valid save in time will be posted and ranked.

WARNING - following text is just MY PERSONAL OPINION, and it is an account of how the mission is built - not a guide. If your experience is different, ignore what it says. You may have found a better strategy than me.

Some facts about the scenario :
Small desert map, some walls on the map, more walls can't be built. One pack of hyenas to the side of the map. No towers. Frequent attacks (including Bedouin sneak attacks) and requests (copper, gems, luxury goods).
Plenty of trade routes, all land. Very limited resources : Ostriches for food, copper, gems. All other raw materials and lot of food can be imported. Main exports - copper, luxury goods, gems; finished products from imported raw materials are exportable, too.
Highest possible housing level - Stately Manor (no Senet house).
Greatest challenges - city layout (limited space, undesirable structures near housing); increasing the population while maintaining high prosperity.

I'm looking forward to your contributions! Feel free to comment on anything, from organization to new ideas for a contest.

I had stately manors in Serabit Khadim at hard difficulty when the population was small enough for "perfect" city-wide juggle, music, and dance coverage. (My Meidum in the Downloads also has stately manors at hard difficulty without a senet house.)

SenetEr,

Since the "mission briefing" above mentioned that elegant manors were the best housing, I thought it might avoid hard feelings to correct it in public. (I haven't decided whether to enter the contest.)

You make an interesting point. I started to write a much longer reply with "I don't suppose I'm giving away any secrets...", but then decided that some people might be annoyed if I "gave away" something. What do you think?

I'm glad you brought it up. I think it would have been perfectly fair on your part not to have mentioned it. Although, since it was an error in the mission briefing, I think it is great that you did it. A good number (probably the majority) of contestants would have not tried for perfect entertainment ratings without this info as CR is not a requirement in this mission. I wouldn't have thought to do this even though I have also had elegant manors without a senet house. I wouldn't have remembered
It is a lesson for me when I design scenarios to avoid definitive statements that may inadvertently be erroneous. No offense Baltic , I think you did an awesome job putting this contest together.

Brugle, thank you for mentioning it. You didn't give away any secret, you just said something that everyone can know. If such erroneous statement appears in contest announcement, the best thing you can do is to call attention to it. When I was testing the scenario, I didn't try to go past Common Manor - and as I seldom have Perfect coverage of all types of entertainment, it didn't occur to me that Stately Manor is possible.

I will be more cautious in my statements, but I think that such information... of course correct ... should be a part of briefing. But I have to say that this is only an additional information, based on MY knowledge - not the rules or criteria. You can have entirely different opinion regarding the challenges of the map etc. I guess Dragon could tell tales about it, from C3 contests.

BTW, Dragon, are you here around? We miss you!

Baltic,

I only had stately manors for a short time in Serabit Khadim (as population grew they devolved to elegant manors), and might not have noticed except my daughter took a look and said "what's that?".

Actually, the reply I started (but didn't post) discussed not only that but also some "challenges of the map". I'll send you (and Tomek) an email--you can tell me if it's appropriate to post.

Baltic,
I am curios as to how you edited a career mission to require a palatial estate? I thought these missions could not be edited.

I guess he'll be using Dragon2's savegame editor.

Brugle is right , it might be possible to reach a higher level of housing in the mission , but as WC2 is population and 100 PR is not that difficult , if you want to keep the perfect coverage you would have much less space for the houses .

Career missions can not be edited directly, you have to start the mission, save it and then edit. I used a saved game editor which Tomek has sent me... I don't know whether it is Dragon's or Buggi's editor, but it allows changing the winning criteria, including houses required to win.

Let's wait for the results, we'll see whether the winner will have Stately Manors or not.

Baltic, when I send the save, do I send the latest(meaning the winning one) or including the progressive saves? And also, when the winning screen comes(or whatever, I don't know whether there is a winning screen or not) do I stay on for two years or what? Another question: where do I unzip the contest mission file to?

Pharaoher,
create a new family first, that will create a sub-folder ../Pharaoh/Save/Family name. Then unzip the file into this folder, start Pharaoh and choose the correct family. Load saved game (it isn't a map, it is a save) and play!
I wouldn't recommend to unzip any downloaded files into your "own" family folder, to avoid confusion.

Please send only the final save when you submit your result. You may be asked to send the progressive saves for a check by mail or here in this thread - if you are not asked to do so, leave these saves on your hard disk until the official results are announced. Then you can delete them.

In this particular mission you will never get to the promotion screen, because I have set requirements for housing that are not achievable. You can play as long as you wish and make the final save when you are happy with the result (and when Completion Criteria are met : 80 Kingdom, not in debt). In other missions you may be asked to save after declining the promotion, but then it will be stated explicitly.

You can, in theory, reach Palatial Estate level in Serabit although this is not required for 100 prosperity, this will boil down to a population event with the food requirements as the limiting factor.

How could palatial estates be made without a senet house?

Your quite correct Brugle, I'm talking out of my hat, Elegant Manor is the highest level achievable, although Stately Manors crop up momentarily.

Submissions are starting to arrive! I'll try to confirm to everyone that I have received the message as soon as possible, hopefully latest in 24 hours. I'll confirm only the fact that I have received a message with an attachment - not that the attachment is in order, or even that the save corresponds to winning conditions. If I later check the save and realize that something is wrong, I will contact you again - otherwise it means all is OK.

Looking forward to more submissions!

The second mission is already available, but you still have a few hours to submit Serabit Khadim!

Mail server at my ISP is currently out of order, but I hope no messages will get lost... however, if I don't reply to your mail, please, try to contact me once again later. Hopefully this problem won't last long.

Submissions for Serabit Khadim are closed now.
We have received 7 results, and here are preliminary results:

All players reached prosperity 100, therefore it was pure population contest.

Tomek - 8604
SenetEr - 8249
Maxenkhemet - 5711
Davidicus Rex - 4980 (has to be verified, I couldn't load the save)
Stringbags - 4280
Rathn - 3837
Da Pharaoher - 3031

Final results will be announced in a separate thread when progressive saves are checked. Players, who should send progressive saves, were contacted by mail.

If you disagree with your result, mail me, so that I can check it!

Sure, at least the winner's city will be always available for download, as soon as results are verified. Disk space on my site is limited though... we will see, there is a possibility that I get more in a few weeks, and until then it should be OK.

And now, on to Men-aten! I'm curious at your results... and there are more missions coming! I hope more people will try their luck in the contest, now that we have the possibility to play at Normal as well.

Congrats Tomek
I know how hard it was for me to get past 8200. I think your pop is amazing.

BTW, I'm a little shocked that we had so few entries. Where was everyone??? *surprise*

Well, I'm not shocked, as I suppose most players are exploring the map editor right now, but I hoped for better response, too. I'm afraid the competition is hidden here in Competition corner, many people don't visit it at all - if there is some discussion about contests and so on on other forums (Game help and Senet house), maybe they will take notice. We need to tell people that something is going on here, otherwise they don't come...

Well, here goes. This is my first post so hello to all.

First, thanks Baltic for a great contest. On my first trip through, Serabit Khadim was one of my favorite scenarios. I did not submit for two reasons:- I only got my pop up to 6404 (figured would have to at least push 7000) and I didn't finish in time.

Congrats to Tomek (and SenetEr). I can almost see how you got 8000+ people but how in the world did you feed them? Once I got beyond 6000, my pop fluctuated quite a bit between imports of food.

Unemployment was also a little bit of a problem but Police Stations fixed that.

As a little bit of comic relief, I ended up with one SY having 9 blocks of Plain Stone. I bet you guys couldn't do that! They just appeared. The SY was accepting Fish, Beer, and Luxery Goods and getting papyrus. It would seem that one of the traders inadvertently got mixed up between beer or fish and stone. Now, we all know how easy that can happen (especially if he was sampling his goods), but he wasn't supposed to even have stone!

As a suggestion to get more competitors. Would it be possible to put the download in the downloads section of this site. I was taken aback (for about 10 seconds) when I went to Baltic's site and was confronted with words I couldn't read. Also had to download a language converter before I could even enter. This may deter some people.
