I've been considering upgrading from my 1920x1080 desktop monitor, and I'm considering treating myself to this 5120x2160 device. However, I've come to realize that both this and even regular 4k (3840x2160) might offer more pixels than Pharaoh's smallest maps contain. Assuming I'm using this excellent Pharaoh custom resolution tool, what would happen if I used either of said resolutions? Those of you using older widescreen patches, I would encourage you to check this tool out. It fixes some display issues on the world map, and other small niceties.

Obviously this purchase is not primarily for Pharaoh, but I confess that I do love the idea of seeing some of my favorite large cities spread across all 34 inches of the LG device.

Recently also generated a 4k version of the exe just to take screenshots of the city (generally playing in 1920x1080 though else things become way too small), and the first few cities/small maps will have the rest of the map filled with black squares. Not centred though, your city will shift into the lower right corner of the screen: https://i.imgur.com/lmg4BhK.jpg

Is that because the map is too small for the resolution, or does it happen on all maps?

What size screen are you playing on? I find 1920x1080 to be fine on my 15" laptop screen. That makes me optimistic that the 5120x2160 might be fine on a 34" screen. Regardless, I'm glad it works, even if it would be preferable to center the map.

The map is too small. Essentially, each map has a fixed amount of vertical and horizontal pixels, and if your monitor can display more vertical or horizontal pixels than exist, the blackspace is created. On 4k resolutions I think this would only affect Pharaoh's smaller map sizes, but an 8k monitor could potentially have too many pixels for all Pharaoh maps, and depending on screen size also make the game unplayable.

Playing on a 27". Tried out 2560x1600 for a while but even that felt a bit too zoomed out for me, but then again I don't have the best eyes
The black filler only happens on maps too small. Larger maps display fine in 4K. But I don't know how the behaviour will be on ultra wide (>16:9) ARs like OP is planning to do

Ooh, I love 16:10. I literally would consider a Macbook only for their 2560x1600 screens. As I've been looking at possibilities for new external monitors, I've been greatly disappointed by the lack of 3840x2400 options. After using someone else's 21:9 monitor infrequently, I believe I could get used to that aspect ratio easily. I've been unable to find 16:9 screens satisfactory in any resolution or form factor. For me, 16:9 is a bad compromise between 16:10 and 21:9.
