I have enjoyed the city building games since they came out and loved extending the games by creating my own scenarios for them. Especially Caesar 3 and Zeus to fill out the historical timelines.

I downloaded Emperor from GOG recently and am playing it for the first time. I was thinking of extending the the timeline further along up to about the mid 1700's and create cities like Hong Kong and Singapore and establish trade with the Americas, Japan Korea and other areas.

However the editor doesn't appear to allow the user to name their own cities and trade partners? Instead giving a list of names to choose from. This is strange since the Zeus editor allowed players to name their cities anything they wanted as well as having a list to chose from. This seems to be a feature they removed from the editor for Emperor instead of adding one in.

I have looked on the site to see if there was a download to fix this. So far the closest thing I found was the Japan mod that someone made. It came with an alternate .eng file to use for the Japanese names.

So this seems to be the only way to change the names in the game. Is there a download somewhere that somehow circumvents this problem?

Hello Timaeus and welcome to Emperor Heaven. Your observations and research are correct. The Campaign Creator for Emperor is not robust enough to allow designers to use custom city names. We have to pick city names from the set list of names that is available. The same applies to city leader names, and even those leader names are sometimes partitioned to shorter lists based on the nationality of the city.

For many years I have lamented this lack of flexibility in the Campaign Creator.

Unfortunately, there has never been a download provided to enhance the Campaign Creator to allow features like custom names.

Your only choice is to hack into the game code and 'mod' the game, which I'm sure you know is complex and comes with its own unique set of challenges for designers and players. For those reasons, I have avoided modding in all the campaigns I have built over the years. However, I encourage you to look into it and make your own decision. Other designers have done it here.

One last thing to mention: if you are serious about designing custom campaigns for Emperor, I encourage you to search through all my old posts in the Emperor Scenario Design forum. Be sure to change the default search from 1 year to 'all' so you can see everything. I have done my best to share my observations on the nuances of the Campaign Creator over the years.

Thanks for the reply. I figured there wasn't an easy fix or else it would be readily available somewhere. Rather than trying to fix it in a hex editor, which is thus changing the code and rendering it illegal to post, I opted to simply make my own maps with the names of the cities I intend to use already on them.

I had already made my own pictures for the upload sequence and the various background images. And since we run the games in wide screen and change the maps anyway it wasn't that far out of the way to simply create my own maps for use in my scenarios.

Although the in game names will remain the same at least the maps reflect what I intend them to be and the maps I chose to use show the land divisions of the times. This is especially true in times like the three kingdoms or the Tang dynasty when land divisions are in constant flux.

In the last few years we have relaxed our policy on game modifications here at Emperor Heaven. We will host your modded versions of the game. All we ask is that you write clear installation & deinstallation instructions for the players when you submit your download here to our site.

Good luck in your projects. I am a huge fan of the Three Kingdoms period and would be very interested to see what you design for it.
